TONAWANDA, N.Y. – Senior
Ryan Cohn and freshman
Celia Webster each won two events, leading Binghamton to a sweep at Canisius in its season-opening swimming & diving dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Tonawanda Aquatic Center. The Bearcat men's team took a 169-125 decision while the women's squad rallied for a 156-141 victory.
Cohn swept both the men's one- and three-meter diving events, with scores of 271.35 and 266.03 respectively. Webster, meanwhile, captured the women's 200 back (2:08.77) and 100 fly (59.77).
Webster was one of four Binghamton freshmen who won an individual event in their collegiate debut.
Maria Pignatelli was first in the women's 50 free (25.54) and was part of the first-place 200 free relay team - which also included senior
Alyssa Martin as well as juniors
Molly Greeley and
Maddie Hoover – and clocked a time of 1:36.66. On the men's side.
David Ponce won the men's 200 back (1:57.18) while
Liam Preston took top honors in the 1000 free (9:48.86). In addition, Preston led off the first-place 200 free relay team, which also included senior
Ryan Maierle, junior
Travis Phillips as well as sophomore
Elijah Lanfear and recorded a time of 1:25.51.
Other winners on the men's side included Lanfear in the 50 free (21.27), junior
Jake Vecchio in the 100 back (52.97), senior
Justin Meyn in the 100 free (47.53) and junior
Xiaoyu Lin in the 200 breast (2:09.14). Lanfear, Vecchio and Maierle also joined junior
Eric Kroon in winning the 200 medley relay (1:33.80).
"Our men showed great depth today as we get later into the meet," head coach
Jerry Cummiskey said. "Canisius swam well and they had some good first-place swims early on. But winning both relays was big for us and we outscored them in several key races."
Other Bearcat winners on the women's side included junior
Mel Carousso in the 1000 free (11:01.78) and fellow junior
Marley Zimmerman in the 500 free (5:27.45).
The Bearcats were behind in the women's meet for most of the day but back-to-back wins by Zimmerman in the 500 free and Webster in the 100 fly gave them a slim lead heading into the final 200 free relay. The Bearcats then took places one and three in that relay to lock up the win.
"The women really showed great resiliency," Cummiskey said. "We didn't start off well but Marley and Celia's wins gave us the energy we needed going into the final relays. Then our relays did a great job to help us finish the meet and get the win."
Binghamton hosts Bucknell in its home opener next Saturday at 1 p.m.
