VESTAL, N.Y. - Two mirror-image teams battle with first place on the line when Binghamton women's soccer (7-5-3, 4-1-1 America East) hosts UMass Lowell (7-5-3, 4-1-1 AE) at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. It's the next-to-last regular season game for both teams, who have identical overall and conference records and are part of a four-way tie for first place in the America East standings.
The Bearcats have already clinched a top five playoff spot but are chasing a top-two spot and accompanying bye into a home semifinal game. Binghamton closes out the regular season Thursday at sixth-place UMBC. With its next point earned in the standings, BU would secure a top-four finish and home playoff game (quarters or semis).
Seniors
Maya Anand,
Olivia McKnight,
Victoria McKnight,
Nicole Scott and
Grace Vittoria will be honored pregame on Senior Day.
Anand continues to lead the America East in both goals (10) and points (24) and is making a strong case for conference Player of the Year honors. Sophomore forward
Peyton Gilmore has six goals and 14 points and the McKnight twins, Olivia and Victoria, each have nine points. Sophomore keeper
Kaitlyn Williams owns a 1.47 goals against average and a sparkling 84.4 save percentage.
UMass Lowell has the identical overall and conference record as the Bearcats and the River Hawks also have scored the exact same number of goals as BU this season (27). The team is on a six-game unbeaten streak and in their last two outings, tied Maine 1-1 and beat UMBC 2-0. Sophomore Ioanna Papatheodorou, the reigning America East Rookie and Striker of the Year, has nine goals and 21 points — both just behind BU's
Maya Anand atop the conference. Elite defender Dunja Mostarac is a four-time first team all-conference member and the two-time reigning AE Defender of the Year.
The River Hawks have qualified for the postseason five straight seasons and were picked to win the America East in the Coaches' Preseason Poll (BU was picked fourth). The team's lone conference setback was a 1-0 road loss at Albany in late September.
Binghamton leads the all-time series 7-3-1 but the teams have split the last five games (2-2-1). Last September, UML scored in overtime for a 1-0 win. Five months earlier, BU eliminated the host and top-seeded River Hawks in the America East semifinals 1-0. The last time they met in Vestal (Oct. 7, 2018), UML posted a 3-1 win. Â Â Â Â Â
