VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton Athletics elected its Hall of Fame Class of 2022 in the 26th annual ceremony Saturday afternoon at the Events Center. Joining the elite group of Hall of Fame members are women's basketball great
Andrea Holmes '12, wrestling All-American
Donnie Vinson '12, tennis champion
Sven Vloedgraven '11, longtime broadcaster and master of ceremonies
Roger Neel and the record-setting
1994-95 men's tennis team.
"Athletics is very important to Binghamton University and doing well at athletics is also very important," University President Harvey Stenger said in his opening remarks to the crowd of 120+. "So recognizing our best athletes and bringing them here is very important to us. It's great to have you all here today. Thank you for your loyal support of Binghamton Athletics."
"Each year I look forward to the Hall of Fame ceremony because as an athletics director, this is what we strive for with our student-athletes," Interim Director of Athletics
Dennis Kalina said in his remarks. "Success on the fields of competition, in the academic realm an then in life after sport. These people we are recognizing today have done just that. These individuals have given so much to this University and to see what they have done after graduation is truly satisfying. This class is also special because I get to help recognize somebody who I call my friend, Roger Neel. As you read the biographies and testimonials of our inductees, there are several attributes that are consistent in all of of them: passion, character and leadership. These individuals serve as a motivation for how we can help our current and future Bearcat student-athletes develop in those areas. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor."
Holmes is the only four-time America East all-conference selection in program history. She tallied 1,557 points, which ranks second during BU's Division I era. Holmes led the Bearcats in assists all four years and led the team in scoring for the final three.
Vinson was a four-time NCAA qualifier who has the most career wins (132) in program history. He produced a remarkable accomplishment at the 2012 NCAA Championship when he won seven consecutive elimination matches to place third at 149 pounds - the highest NCAA finish of any Bearcat wrestler in its Division I era.
Vloedgraven is the most decorated tennis player in program history. He was the force behind a dominant men's tennis team that won four straight America East titles and made four NCAA appearances between 2009-12. Vloedgraven was a three-time America East Player of the Year and two-time NCAA qualifier.
Having served decades as a strong advocate of the athletics department, Neel becomes just the second outside contributor selected to the Hall, joining longtime department physician Dr. Douglas Kerr (2012). A former standout collegiate athlete, Neel has been a BU radio, television and streaming play-by-play announcer for 23 years spanning multiple sports. His coverage of Bearcat athletics was the most prominent among local media members during his long tenure as brand manager and sports director at Newsradio 1290 WNBF. Including this, Neel now is a member of four distinct halls of fame.
The 1994-95 men's tennis team, coached by Hall of Fame member
Michael Starke, earned distinction and national prominence. The team produced a 17-4 record and capped its historic season with the program's first NCAA tournament team berth. In an era when only 12 teams were selected across the country and nearly exclusively from warm weather states, BU achieved its highest national ranking, finishing the year No. 10 in the nation.
Nominations for future classes are accepted year-round and can be sent to committee chair
John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu).
