VESTAL, N.Y. - Jacob Nolan was named EIWA Co-Wrestler of the Week today for his clutch victories against two ranked opponents this past weekend. Nolan entered the week ranked No. 22 in the nation at 184 pounds. On Sunday afternoon, Nolan recorded an upset victory, 5-4, over No. 10 Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota in a highly competitive match. On Friday night, Nolan defeated No. 29 DJ Parker of North Dakota State, 3-1. Nolan scored a takedown late in the third period in a tightly contested bout. Nolan, an NCAA qualifier at 174 pounds last season, made the jump to 184 pounds this season. He is 3-0 to begin the season. All three of his wins were recorded in duals, and he will likely ascend in the rankings this week.
"It was nice to get EIWA wrestler of the week," Nolan said. "It shows the work that my teammates, coaches, and I have put in since the end of last season. It's an award to build off and continue to work toward March."
In Sunday's match against Salazar, Nolan scored first with a takedown in the first period, and he ended the first period with a 2-1 lead. In the second period, Salazar escaped to make it 2-2, but Nolan scored another takedown with a perfect lateral drop off of a counter attack to take a 4-1 lead. The officials went to the table to clarify if any near-fall points should've been awarded, but the call on the mat stood, and Nolan had a 4-2 lead. Nolan still led 4-2 with 1:14 left in the second period, but Salazar tied the match at 4-4. Salazar escaped right after Nolan was called for stalling near the end of the second period. In the final seconds of the second period, a crazy scramble situation brought the crowd to its feet, but Nolan was able to fight off Salazar's attempt. Nolan began the third period in bottom position, and escaped with 40 seconds left in the third period to take a 5-4 lead. Nolan utilized all of his defensive skills in the final seconds to fight off another attempt from Salazar before time ran out
"It's great to see Jacob recognized by the EIWA for his success," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "Others are starting to see what we've always known Jacob is capable off."
