Men's basketball stalls against UNH 69-60

Falko, McGriff combine for 24 points but BU comes up short in front of season-high 2,581

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting New Hampshire (11-10, 6-6 America East) pulled down 43 rebounds and used an 11-0 early second-half run to forge a 69-60 win over Binghamton men's basketball (10-12, 7-6 AE) Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The Wildcats led for more than 35 minutes and withstood a late push by the Bearcats, who were energized by a season-high 2,581 in attendance.

Twice in the last six minutes BU cut their margin to five but couldn't draw closer. The offense went silent for nearly four critical minutes down the stretch and UNH sealed the win with 7-of-8 free throw shooting in the final 1:09.

"We couldn't get a stop when we needed it down the stretch," head coach Levell Sanders said. "It was a tough game ... we didn't do a good job on some of the things we were focused on. We let them get way too many offensive rebounds. That was the difference in the game. We weren't making shots so we have to find a way to free up our shooters and rebounding is one of those ways. Rebounding is effort and focus and they showed they wanted it more than us today."

Leading scorer Jacob Falko was limited to 13 points in a foul-plagued 26 minutes. Falko picked up two fouls in the first nine minutes and only played 10 minutes in the first half. The Bearcats led 12-11 eight minutes in before UNH ran off a 12-0 run to take the lead. Binghamton trailed by as many as 11 points before using a finishing 10-3 run to pull within three, 33-30, at intermission.

In the second half, BU led 36-33 before the Wildcats embarked on the decisive 11-0 run that featured a pair of 3-pointers.

In his return to the lineup after an injury, sophomore guard John McGriff tallied 11 points, five assists and five rebounds. Junior guard Hakon Hjalmarsson added nine points (4-of-6 FG) off the bench.

The Bearcats host Albany Wednesday in the Weis Pack The House promotion.
