Men’s lacrosse falls to Marist 11-9 in season opener

Winkoff nets hat trick in defeat

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Binghamton men's lacrosse opened its 2022 season with a 11-9 loss to visiting Marist Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats were led by senior Kevin Winkoff who finished the game with three goals and two assists.

"I'm proud of the way we competed today, I'm proud of the way we stayed together," head coach Kevin McKeown said. "I think we took a good step from our last scrimmage ... we just have to continue to work on getting better."

After surrendering two goals early in the first quarter, senior attacker Justin Roderka responded late with a goal off a feed from Winkoff. Binghamton carried over the late push into the second, outscoring the Red Foxes 6-2. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Thomas Greenblatt, sophomore Ethan Insinga, Winkoff (3), and freshman Matthew Keegan all found the back of the net, giving the Bearcats a 7-4 lead heading into the half.

Marist used a four-goal run in the third to take a 8-7 lead before Roderka buried a goal as the clock expired to end the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, however, the Red Foxes used a decisive three-goal run to take control. Senior Daniel MacKinney scored his first goal of the season halfway through the fourth.

"We can't allow those four-goal runs," McKeown added. "We'll just continue to work this week and work towards getting a win next weekend," he said.

Binghamton was strong at the face-off position with both Matthew Desouza and Ross Chazanow putting their stamp on the game. Desouza won 10-of-15 face-off battles while Chazanow finished 4-for-7.

On the defensive end, freshman Lorenzo Ramos and senior captain Drew Furlong led the way both with two caused turnovers.

The Bearcats will have a week to prepare for their Feb. 19 matchup against St. Bonaventure at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
