BOSTON, Mass. – Graduate student
Dan Schaffer capped off his stellar weekend with a lifetime-best 3:57.47 mile at the Boston/Last Chance Meet on Sunday afternoon at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center. The non-scoring meet was geared towards those athletes who want to lower their top times in attempt to qualify for specific meets.
Schaffer's time was second in his heat and 11th overall out of 44 entrees in the men's mile. The field included several professional and unattached runners. The winning time in Schaffer's heat was 3:56.10 by Christian Noble of Lee University. The top overall time of 3:48.87 was turned in by Josh Kerr of the Brooks Beat Track Club.
With Sunday's performance, Schaffer accomplished the rare feat of having run three separate mile races in three straight days on the same track. On Friday, he anchored the first-place Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team at the America East Championships with a split of 3:56.13. The following day, he won the conference's individual mile title with a time of 4:07.72.
According to the NCAA Division I qualifying list, Schaffer's top mile time ranks No. 37 in the nation. The top 16 times will qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala. The No, 16 time heading into this weekend was 3:56.10.
During the current indoor season, Schaffer has broken the four-minute mile mark three times. After running 3:58.84 at the Penn State National Open on Jan. 22, he clocked a 3:59.31 mile at the Millrose Games on Jan. 29.
Also this season, Schaffer has the 39th-fastest 3,000 time at the NCAA Division I level (7:50.05).
NOTE: Only the first leg of a relay counts as a qualifying time in an individual event.
