MORGANTOWN, WV. - Binghamton volleyball capped off the Mountaineer Invitational with a 3-0 sweep over Merrimack Friday afternoon. Despite a tight opening set, the Bearcats rebounded to run away with the 25-21, 25-10, 25-17 victory.
Stefana Stan and Tsvetelina Ilieva each had 11 kills to lead the offense. Giulia Bonifacio and Anna Sprys had nine and seven kills respectively. Bonifacio also had a team-leading 15 digs and Lottie Scully handed out 33 assists.
BU led throughout the first set, but relinquished a large advantage late. The Warriors (2-8) cut it to 23-21 before two Ilieva kills ended the threat. Stan, Bonifacio, Sprys and Ilieva all registered kills during the frame.
The Bearcats dominated the second set, creating a comfortable advantage throughout. A 10-0 run, sparked by a Scully solo block and a kill by Bonifacio made a 13-9 edge open up to a 23-9 lead. Three points later Binghamton got itself within one set of a win.
The final frame was another strong one for BU, as the final tie was at 4-4. Vaulted by three aces, 16 kills and a solo block by Sprys, the Bearcats won 25-17 and improved to 8-4 on the year.
The team returns home for a matchup with Niagara Tuesday. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
