Volleyball Downs LIU 3-1

Bearcats earn fourth straight win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton volleyball team (10-8, 3-0) earned a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-18) non-conference victory on the road over LIU (4-15, 3-2) Tuesday night. The win marked BU's tenth of the season and fourth consecutive. 

The Bearcats commanded the match, posting four times as many blocks with a season-best 16 to the Sharks four. Binghamton owned a 73-57 digs advantage over the home team. BU recorded a .312 hitting percentage while holding its opponent to a .175 clip. 

Two Bearcats registered double-doubles in Tsvetelina Ilieva and Lottie Scully while three Ilieva, Ella Schabort and Misa Dlouha notched double digit kills. Ilieva's team-best 18 kills came along with 14 digs, and six blocks at .283. 

Scully combined for 43 assists, 15 digs, two blocks and two service aces. The setter added three kills at a .600 clip. Schabort and Dlouha grabbed 13 and 10 kills apiece, at their own impressive .281 and .563 hitting percentages. 

Anna Sprys and Dlouha tied for a team-best eight blocks while Lydia Adam posted five rejections from the net. 

Sophomore libero Madison Konopka governed the back row for BU with team-high 17 digs. Sydney Aguirre recorded 10 digs to add to the Binghamton tally. 

The Bearcats got off to a slow start, dropping the first set to LIU by just three points in a set that featured eight tie scores and two lead changes. 

Binghamton leveled the match in the second set, trading points with the Sharks until pulling ahead by five with four consecutive points at 14-9. BU furthered its lead with three more, 3-0 runs before notching 10 point, 25-15 second set win. 

The visiting team came up on top again in the second set with an early 6-2 lead. The Bearcats continued to add onto their advantage with an eight point gap at 22-14 before LIU registered five consecutive points to make it 23-20. Kills from Ilieva and Adam finished the set for BU 25-22. 

The match's final set featured multiple point runs by both teams before Binghamton created an insurmountable lead with four consecutive points at 23-16. With two more points on kills from Dlouha and a Shark error, the Bearcats sealed the match win with a 25-18 final set victory. 

Next up, Binghamton will stay on the road for an America East contest against Albany, Sunday, Oct. 15. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
