Volleyball Falls to UMBC

Ilieva registers ninth double-double of the season

BALTIMORE, Md. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton University volleyball team (11-9, 4-1) dropped its first America East match of the season 3-0 (29-27, 25-16, 25-20) to UMBC Thursday night. 

Despite the loss, BU showed its skill at the net, with five Bearcats combining to own a 8-7 advantage in team blocks. 

Tsvetelina Ilieva registered her ninth double-double this fall with 13 kills and 12 digs, her seventeenth double-digit kill performance of the season. Ella Schabort followed her teammate with 11 kills of her own. 

Lydia Adam and Misa Dlouha added six and five kills apiece, respectively. Dlouha earned a team-high six blocks while Adam chipped in three. 

Lottie Scully collected 27 assists at setter and Madison Konopka posted nine digs at libero. 

Binghamton faced a competitive first set that featured an incredible 17 tie scores and seven lead changes. The competitors traded runs of three more to begin the set before going back and forth for the rest of the frame. With three straight points on kills from Scully and Ilieva, the Bearcats led the stanza 24-22. UMBC didn't back down, saving five set points to win the frame by two at 29-27.

Ella Schabort posted seven of her 11 kills in the first set while Ilieva and Adam notched four apiece. 

The match's final two sets also went the way of the Retrievers at 25-16 and 25-20. BU initially led the set 9-3 until took back the lead at 13-12. Binghamton came close again at 16-16 on a service ace from Dlouha until UMBC scored nine straight to win 25-16. 

Next up, the Bearcats will host conference opponents Albany Friday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. and NJIT Sunday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. inside West Gym.
