Women’s Basketball Holds off St. Bonaventure 73-65

Bearcats shoot 50 percent, land four player in double figures

VESTAL, N.Y. — Binghamton (2-2) shot 50 percent from the field (27-54) and posted four players in double figures to defeat St. Bonaventure 73-65 (1-3) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory marked the third time this season that the Bearcats have scored at least 70 points.

Redshirt sophomore guard Ella Wanzer scored a team-best 12 points, all of which came from the three-point range. Right behind her was freshman guard Kaylee Krysztof with 11 points. She came into the game in the second period and sank all four of her field goal attempts, three of which being three-pointers.

Graduate student guard Denai Bowman and redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Weltz added an additional 10 points each. Weltz also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists.

Bowman now has 1,255 points for her career and moves into eighth place all time in Binghamton program history. Against St. Bonaventure, she surpassed Rachel Laws (2002-06), who scored 1,246 career points and was inducted into the Binghamton Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002-06.

For the Bonnies, Dani Haskell and Tianna Johnson both netted a game-high 16 points. The other St. Bonaventure player to reach double figures was Maddie Dziezgowski with 10 points.

Binghamton blew the game open with a 12-2 run in a span of 5:02 to take a 29-15 lead with 6:08 left in the second quarter. Freshman guard Bella Pucci led the attack with six points - coming from back-to-back three-pointers.

With 20 seconds left in the third period, the Bonnies were down 64-43. A layup by Payton Fields, however, started a 14-0 in a span of 3:30 that brought St. Bonaventure to within 64-57 with 6:50 remaining in the fourth period.

The Bearcats countered with five straight points, but the Bonnies went on another 8-0 run in a span of 4:44 to close the gap to 69-64 with 58 seconds left in the period.

From there, the Bearcats closed out the game with four free made throws. Bowman and junior forward Genevieve Coleman each sank two of them.

"It is nice to go pretty deep in the bench," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Everybody knew that when they were out there, that they could go as hard as they can because they are going to get someone to come in and pick them up."

Binghamton got 28 points off the bench and canned a season-high 12 three-point field goals. The Bearcats also shot 50 percent from three-point range.

Pucci finished with a career-best eight points and added three rebounds. Sophomore guard Meghan Casey chipped in seven points, three rebounds and three assists.

Binghamton travels to Navy on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game.
