Women’s Basketball Falls Short at Navy 66-59

Wanzer nets 17 points, Weltz and Coleman add 13 points each

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Zenai Barnett-Gay poured in career-high and game-best 29 points and Kyah Smith added 19 points, powering Navy (2-2) to a 66-59 win over Binghamton (2-3) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday evening at Alumni Hall. The game marked the first of three straight road games for the Bearcats.

Barnett-Gay, who came into the game averaging 20.0 points per night, shot 11-for-16 from the field and sank seven of her nine free throw attempts. Smith, meanwhile, was 9-of-15 from the field and also finished with six rebounds.

Binghamton was led by redshirt sophomore guard Ella Wanzer, who finished with 17 points. She went 5-for-9 from three-point range, which gives her 16 treys during the past three games.

Fellow redshirt sophomore Jadyn Weltz and junior forward Genevieve Coleman each netted 13 points. Weltz added four assists, a pair of steals and three rebounds while Coleman grabbed five rebounds and sank all five of her free throw attempts.

Graduate student guard Denai Bowman, meanwhile, chipped in 11 points. She now has 1,266 points for her career and is just three points away from tying Cathy Mackin (1994-98) for seventh place all-time in program history.

Wanzer had six of her points in the opening period as the Bearcats took a 20-8 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Midshipmen, however, battled back to within 33-27 at the half.

The third quarter was the turning point of the game as the Midshipmen outscored Binghamton 22-9 to go up 49-42. Barnett-Gay and Smith combined for 16 points during that stretch and Navy scored 11 of its points off of Bearcat turnovers.

In the final period, Navy built their lead to as much as 66-50 with 2:05 left to go. The Bearcats drained three straight three-point field goals in the final 1:45 but their spurt proved to be too little too late.

"Going into the game, we knew that Barnett-Gay and Smith were the two players who could hurt us and they hurt us," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We had too many lulls during the game where we couldn't make buckets and we couldn't get stops."

Navy out rebounded Binghamton 36-27 and held a 42-30 advantage in points in the paint.

Binghamton heads to Puerto Rico for an in-season tournament over the Thanksgiving holiday. The Bearcats face Appalachian State on Friday and Furman the following day. Both contests are set for 2:30 p.m. EST.
