Volleyball Downs Manhattan 3-1

Bearcats conclude non conference schedule with victory

RIVERDALE, N.Y. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton University volleyball team (14-11, 6-3) concluded its non conference schedule with a 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-18, 25-14) win at Manhattan Wednesday night.

BU dominated its opponent at the net, owning a 14-4 advantage in blocks. Binghamton held the Jaspers to a .125 hitting percentage while registering a .285 clip as a team. Three Bearcats recorded hitting percentages of .300 or better in Sydney Aguirre, Tsvetelina Ilieva, Anna Sprys and Lottie Scully

Ilieva earned a team-best 25 kills in the victory, her fifth performance of 20 or more kills this season. Sprys and Misa Dlouha chipped in seven kills apiece while Aguirre, Lydia Adam and Ella Schabort combined for 10 successful attack attempts.

Sprys led the Bearcats with eight blocks against Manhattan. Adam followed her teammate with five blocks, going along with Dlouha and Scully's four rejections each.

Scully posted 43 assists, nine digs and two kills at setter for BU. Madison Konopka grabbed 14 digs and Brenda Reynaga added nine more from the back row.

Both teams traded points to begin the first set until Binghamton notched two 4-0 runs to lead Manhattan, 17-12. The Jaspers put up their own run to cut the Bearcat advantage to one at 21-20 before two of their own service errors and two kills from Ilieva gave BU the set victory 25-23.

Despite dropping the frame by just two points, Binghamton hit at .343 percent and registered a match-high 15 kills in the second set.

BU jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the third stanza before four Manhattan kills and a service ace gave the home team a 13-12 advantage. Both teams went back and forth once again until five consecutive points put the Bearcats out in front 21-16. The Jaspers tacked on two more points before Binghamton closed out the set with a 4-0 run to win it 25-18.

The Bearcats commanded the final set, scoring eight straight points to lead by 10 at 11-1. Manhattan was unable to overcome BU's surge, recording just a .065 hitting percentage and inevitably dropping the frame 25-14, handing over a 3-1 match victory to the visiting team.

Next up, Binghamton will conclude the 2023 regular season on the road against New Hampshire this Sunday, Nov. 12. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
