VESTAL, N.Y- Binghamton men's lacrosse (6-2, 2-0 AE) won a 17-16 thriller over NJIT (2-6, 0-2 AE). The Bearcats were led by a pair of sophomores in Gage Adams and Matthew Keegan on the day. Adams finished with a career-high 7 points (6G, 1A) and Keegan added 6 points (3G, 3A). BU jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after the first period and looked to be in control but the Highlanders didn't go away without a fight. NJIT would outscore the Bearcats in the next three quarters to keep things interesting.
Senior Matthew DeSouza started the game with the fastest goal in program history just 5 seconds into the contest after winning the opening faceoff. DeSouza would finish with a career-high two goals in the game and won 11-19 faceoffs with 8 ground balls.
The Bearcats would score 6 straight in the first period to start the game before NJIT found the back of the net. In the second period, junior Ethan Insinga started the scoring to push the BU lead to 9-1. NJIT would answer back with a three goal run to make it 9-4. BU would score the next two goals before NJIT used another three goal run to make the contest 11-7. The teams would trade goals going into the second half.
With a foul goal lead at the half, Binghamton looked to take command in the second half but an early goal by NJIT cut the lead just to three. After BU scored three in a row to take a 15-9 lead, the Highlanders would use a five goal run over the third and fourth quarters to make it 15-14. NJIT's comeback was sparked in the second half in part by the faceoffs they won, winning 12-15.
Adams would pick up his fifth goal to put an end to the NJIT run to put BU up by two. The Highlanders would score the next two goals to tie the game at 16 with 4:08 left in the contest. Adams capped off his career day with his sixth and final goal of the game with 3:14 left in the fourth period.
Redshirt freshman Connor Winters would make a couple of big saves following the Adams goal to secure the BU win. Winters finished with a career-high 17 saves in the contest.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Saturday Apr. 1 at UMass Lowell.
