VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton men's lacrosse (3-1) wins a back and forth thriller over St. John's (0-5). With 40 seconds left in the game, redshirt junior Thomas Greenblatt secured a hat trick and a game winner to propel the Bearcats.
"He's a guy that's got a ton of composure out there," said head coach Kevin McKeown "I was proud of him stepping up and drilling that last shot, you could tell he wanted it there."
Greenblatt got the Bearcats going with 7:34 left in the first period with the game's first goal before St. John's scored three straight to take a 3-1 lead into the second period.
The Bearcats used a run of their own to start the second period, scoring five straight, the first coming from senior Nicholas Imburgia in a man-up situation. Greenblatt, sophomore Matthew Keegan, junior Ethan Insinga, and senior Quinn O'Hara all followed with goals to give BU a 6-3 lead before the Red Storm answered.
Connor Kalmus of St. John's used a personal three goal run to tie the game at six with 3:53 left in the quarter.
Before the half, junior Aaron Tebo scored his first goal of the season to give the Bearcats a 7-6 lead.
In the third period, the Red Storm struck first to tie the game. BU responded with goals from O'Hara and Keegan to make the score 9-7. St. John's scored three straight to close the third period, with back to back goals by Brian Kelly and a lone goal by Gavin Legg.
Heading into the fourth period, BU trailed 10-9 when St. John's added a goal by Sean Duffy to push the lead. Insinga and sophomore Gage Adams responded to tie the game at 11. With 2:36 left in the contest St. John's scored to make it 12-11. O'Hara tied things at 12 with a goal with 1:33 left.
On what would be the game winning goal, O'Hara was able to find Greenblatt who found open space after setting the screen, and Greenblatt nailed the shot with 40 seconds on the clock.
Throughout the game, Binghamton controlled the x, winning 23 of 29 faceoffs. Senior Matthew DeSouza won 12-15 (eight groundballs) and junior Ross Chazanow won 11-14 (six groundballs).
BU will be back in action on Tuesday at Lehigh.
