Bearcats sit in second place in America East standings as halfway point nears

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (19-12, 6-3 America East) will hit the halfway point of the conference slate when the Bearcats travel to Union, N.J. and a weekend matchup with NJIT (13-20, 4-5 AE). After an adjustment for impending rain, the teams are set to play a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday and the final game of the series at 7:30 Saturday night at Jim Hynes Stadium on the campus of Kean University.

The Bearcats grabbed the final game of last weekend's series with league-leading Maine, winning a wild affair 18-17. It was the highest one-run game BU has ever played, surpassing the 15-14 win over Oneonta back in 1950. Binghamton has won seven of its last nine and 15 of 20. One win this weekend would give BU its 20th win at the earliest point of any season in program history.

Junior outfielder Tommy Reifler is hitting .391 - good for third in the America East. Reifler has 13 multi-hit games and had five hits and four RBI in the Maine series. Senior first baseman Kevin Gsell is hitting .377, good for fourth in the conference. Gsell has 14 multi-hit games and a team-high nine multi-RBI games. Sophomore second baseman Nick Roselli has been on a tear and is hitting .432 against America East opponents. He is hitting .349 and has a team-best 33 RBI, third in the AE. Roselli carries a 13-game hit streak into the weekend series. Senior left fielder Cavan Tully is batting .346 and has reached base in 24 straight games - the seventh longest streak in program history.

Senior No. 1 starter Thomas Babalis is coming off a strong performance against Maine last Friday. He went 7.0 innings and held the league's top offense to two hits and one run with eight strikeouts.

NJIT has won four of its last five, including a three-game sweep of non-conference foe LIU last weekend. The Highlanders began conference play by dropping three to Bryant. But they then swept three from Albany and took one of three at UMBC. The team ranks No. 1 in the America East in pitching (5.43 ERA) but is sixth in fielding (.963) and last in hitting (.236).

Binghamton leads the all-time series 18-6 and has won five of the last seven. Last season, NJIT took two games in Vestal in May before BU rolled to a 20-5 win at the America East tournament in Orono.
