VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton men's lacrosse (7-3, 3-1 AE) drops home contest, 11-9 to defending America East champs Vermont (6-4, 4-0 AE). The Bearcats jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter but the Catamounts would respond with five goals in the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead into the half. Vermont would score two more times to begin the third period to push the lead to 8-5. BU would only get within one goal (8-7) before Vermont scored three straight in the fourth period to make it 11-7. BU would score two goals in the final minute of the game.
"They out groundballed us by 14 and we failed five clears, against a good team the amount of possessions they got was hard to overcome," head coach Kevin McKeown said.
After trailing 1-0 early in the first quarter, BU would score four straight goals in the first and second quarter to take a 4-1 lead. Redshirt junior Thomas Greenblatt, senior Nicholas Imburgia, sophomores Gage Adams and Matthew Keegan scored the four goals for Binghamton. The Catamounts would score two straight from Connor Boyle before Insinga pushed the lead back out to two for BU. Vermont would score three straight at the 3 minute mark into the half to take the lead. Redshirt freshman Connor Winters would go into the half with 11 saves.
Going into the third period, the Bearcats defense held strong the first few minutes but Vermont would go on to cash in on two man-up opportunities to make the score 8-5. Keegan would answer in the third period with his second goal of the game to cut into the lead. On the day, Vermont finished 3-4 in man-up opportunities, the Bearcats finished 0-3.
Ethan Insinga would score the first goal of the fourth period before the Catamounts went on a three goal run. In the final minute of the contest, Keegan would score back to back goals to make it 11-9.
Winters would finish the game with a career-high 20 saves and a .645 save percentage, the second highest mark of his collegiate career.
"I thought he played fantastic," said McKeown, "the defense played really well in front of him, he's been solid for us all year."
BU will be back in action next Saturday as they travel to take on UMBC.
