Track & Field Competes at Day One of AE Outdoor Championships

Women first, men in second halfway through meet

ALBANY, N.Y. – Binghamton swept the top four places in the women's 3,000 Steeplechase (SC) and the top two places in the men's pole vault, highlighting its performance at Day One of the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the UAlbany Complex. Halfway through the meet, the Bearcat women lead the nine-team field with 48.5 points while the men are second behind UMass Lowell (68 points to 44).

Graduate student Aziza Chigatayeva won her fourth straight America East title in the 3,000 SC, clocking a time of 11:00.42. In the process, she becomes the first Binghamton female ever to four-peat in an event at an America East Conference Track & Field Meet.

Senior Carolyn Burnell was second in the 3,000 (11:15.38) to record her highest finish in the event. She was third last year. Sophomore Jennifer Mui was third (11:19.04) followed by graduate student Elisabeth Van Tassell in fourth (11:26.02).

In the men's pole vault, meanwhile, senior Casey Gribben won his first career outdoor title with a height of 15-11. It marks his fourth career pole vault title, having won the 2019, 2020 and 2022 indoor pole vault events. Junior Brandon Love, who was the defending indoor and outdoor pole vault champion heading into the weekend, was second on (15-5).

The women's pole vault also was a major source of points for Binghamton. Freshman Alyssa Armitage was second (11-7 ¾), followed by junior Caroline Fatta in fifth (10-8) and fellow junior Emily Gorczynski, who tied for eighth (10-2).

Other top finishers on the men's side included senior Marty Dolan, who was third in the 3,000 SC (9:06.60). In the long jump, seniors Jake Restivo and Marcrene Jeannot finished third and fourth respectively with distances of 23-10 ¾ and 23-6.

Freshman Sydney Leitner was third in the women's 10,000 with a time of 37:09.73

The America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships conclude on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m.
