Volleyball Takes Down Merrimack 3-0 to Open Season

Schabort makes impressive BU debut with double-digit kills

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton University volleyball team opened up the 2023 season, and the second annual Bearcat Classic, with a 3-0 sweep of Merrimack College inside the Events Center Friday night. BU dominated the visiting Warriors, taking the three consecutive sets 25-21, 25-13 and 25-17.

"It's really nice to be here in the Events Center for the first time," said Head Coach Allie Yaeger.  "It's always good to get your first win at home and it's answering a lot of questions for us, that's especially what this entire weekend is for. But overall, I was really happy with our effort tonight."

Newcomer Ella Schabort led the way for the Bearcats with 10 kills, seven digs, three block assists and one service ace. While returning senior Tsvetelina Ilieva came up just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs for a .364 hitting percentage.

Misa Dlouha made an impressive debut for Binghamton tonight, tallying eight block assists and three service aces. Lydia Adam also grabbed four block assists in her first match as a Bearcat.

Libero Madison Konopka commanded BU's defense against Merrimack with team-high 16 digs from the back row. First-year setters Danit Cohen and Zoe Myint notched 13 assists apiece in their first appearance for Binghamton as well.

The first set was the tightest of the match, with the Warriors trailing by just two or three points before the Bearcats began to pull away with an ace from Dlouha at 15-9. Merrimack began to battle back though, winning three straight crucial points at both 23-16 and 24-19. Dlouha came through for BU once again with a kill off an assist from Myint to close out the frame.

Binghamton cruised through the second set, coming out to an early 8-3 lead after a kill from Schabort. The Warriors attempted to chip away at the Bearcats lead but remained at least five points back for the entirety of the round. BU finished the set with five straight points to make it a 2-0 advantage heading into the third.

The final set went the way of the Bearcats once again as the squad never once lost its lead. Both teams stayed within four points before BU started to stretch its advantage with six consecutive points to make the frame 22-13. Merrimack added four more points before Schabort closed the set with a kill, 25-17.

Dlouha made her mark in the third, recording five of her eight block assists in the final set. Seven of Ilieva's 10 digs also came in the third frame.

Binghamton will face Duquesne University at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the Events Center before taking on Saint Peter's University at 7 p.m. to finish out the 2023 Bearcat Classic.
