Volleyball Claims Bearcat Classic Title

Ilieva named All-Tournament MVP

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton University volleyball team (3-0) won its final two matches of the weekend Saturday afternoon over Duquesne and Saint Peter's Universities to claim the Bearcat Classic title and remain undefeated through the first weekend of play.

BU took the first game of the afternoon 3-1 over Duquesne (25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 26-24) and then swept Saint Peter's 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-10).

Tsvetelina Ilieva was named All-Tournament MVP while Ella Schabort and Anna Sprys also earned All-Tournament nods.

GAME ONE: Binghamton 3, Duquesne 1

Three Bearcats, Ilieva, Schabort and Zoe Myint all recorded double digit figures in two categories against the Dukes.

Ilieva's double-double was her first of the season, the seventh in her career at BU. The Bulgarian grabbed a team-high 17 kills, 12 digs and four service aces for 22.5 points. She also posted a .239 hitting percentage in 46 total attempts.

In just her second game as a Bearcat, Schabort tallied 17 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. After leading the team in kills last night against Merrimack with 10, the first-year student combined with Ilieva for more than half of the squad's total kills.

Along with Schabort, freshman setter Myint recorded her first career double-double with 19 assists, 11 digs and one service ace. Danit Cohen also collected 20 assists and six digs.

Misa Dlouha and Anna Sprys were effective blockers for the Binghamton, recording six and five blocks respectively against Duquesne. Along with Ilieva and Schabort's rejections, Lydia Adam and Sydney Aguirre combined for five to bring the team's total to 12 blocks.

After dropping the first two points, BU notched four straight blocks to move ahead 4-2 in the first set over the Dukes. Both teams stayed within three or four points of each other through most of the frame before Binghamton recorded eight straight to bring the set to 22-14. DU was able to tack on just two more points until BU took the set 25-16.

The second set was much more competitive between the two squads. Duquesne held the advantage for almost the entirety of the stanza before a kill from Schabort tied it up at 22 apiece late. The Dukes were able to tie it up one more time at 23-23 before Binghamton tallied three straight to win the second frame by two, 25-23.

Duquesne took command of the third set, never losing their lead after the first point. BU fought back in the latter half of the frame, saving four set points before dropping the stanza 25-22. Madison Konopka recorded seven digs while Ilieva posted three kills in the third.

The Bearcats and the Dukes played their most competitive volleyball in the four set with neither team leading by more than three and eight ties. Even at 24 apiece, Binghamton scored two straight points to win the match.

BU dominated at the net against Duquesne with 12 total team blocks, twice as many as its opponent. The Bearcats held their visitors to just a .169 hitting percentage through four sets.

GAME TWO: Binghamton 3, Saint Peter's 0

The Bearcats dominated Saint Peter's in the second match of the afternoon, holding the visiting Peacocks to just 36 points across three sets. Binghamton recorded 35 kills in 78 attempts for an impressive .359 hitting percentage, the team's best performance of the weekend in that category.

Adam and Sprys led the way for the Bearcats in the second game, notching eight kills apiece for a .375 and .571 hitting percentage, respectively. Ilieva and Dlouha followed with six and five kills apiece.

Cohen posted her first double-double as a Bearcat with 12 assists and 11 digs, along with three service aces.

First-year libero Brenda Reynaga made her debut for BU, collecting a team-high 12 digs. Ella Maldonado made her first appearance as a Bearcat as well while sophomore Kasey Tietjen took the court for the first time this year with one kill.

Saint Peter's had an early lead in the first set before Binghamton tied up the frame at 4-4. The set score stayed within two points until BU scored six straight points to make it 14-7. The Peacocks were only able to tack on six more points compared to the Bearcats' 11. A kill from Schabort sealed the set for the home team 25-13.

Binghamton commanded the second set as well, never once losing its lead after the first serve and taking the frame once again at 25-13. BU tallied 11 of its 35 kills in the second set along with four service aces and three blocks.

The Bearcats closed out their impressive weekend run with an assertive 25-10 third set victory. BU held SPU under 10 points for the majority of the stanza until the second to last point at 24-10. Dlouha capped off the final set with a kill to hand the squad the Bearcat Classic title.

Binghamton will travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to compete in three matches at the University at Buffalo Invite, Aug. 31-Sept. 2. The first match will take place on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. against the University of Montana.
