Volleyball Drops Five Setter to Montana

Myint, Ilieva record double-doubles in loss

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Binghamton University volleyball team (3-1) dropped its first match of the fall to Montana 3-2 (17-25, 25-23, 16-25,11-15). The Bearcats battled, taking the second and fourth sets before losing the last frame by just four points.

Tsvetelina Ilieva and Zoe Myint recorded their second double-doubles of the season in the loss, the eighth of Ilieva's career at BU. Ilieva posted a team-high 16 kills and 12 digs while Myint tallied 18 assists and 11 digs.

The Bearcats out blocked their opponents 12-5 while Misa Dlouha, Anna Sprys and Stephanie Gatto each collected five rejections apiece for BU. The three middle blockers also earned respectable hitting percentages with Dlouha at .312, Sprys at .308 and Gatto at an impressive .444.

Danit Cohen led off the first set with a service ace but the Bearcats were unable to maintain their advantage. The frame's only tie came at 2-2 as a result of a kill from Ilieva. Montana built their lead from there, taking the stanza 25-17.

The closest set of the match came in the second where BU and UM tied on seven different occasions and traded leads twice. The two teams were neck and neck until Binghamton won nine consecutive points to bring the frame to 17-8. The Grizzlies added 15 more points compared to the Bearcats' six to tie the stanza at 23-23. An ace from Brenda Reynaga along with a block from Dlouha and Gatto pushed BU to a 25-23 victory. 

Binghamton's third set was another nail-biter with the spread staying within three points before Montana pulled away with six straight to win the frame 25-16. Ella Schabort collected three kills in the set while Reynaga recorded five digs. 

The Bearcats dominated their competition in the fourth stanza, owning the lead for the entirety of the set. After a tie at 3-3, BU continued to stretch its advantage until claiming the set by nine at 25-16. Ilieva posted five of her kills and digs in the set while Myint notched seven assists and six digs. 

The final set featured five tie scores and a sole lead change. Binghamton took an early 2-0 lead before both teams leveled the frame at 3-3, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 9-9. The Bearcats were only able  to tack on two more and dropped the frame 15-11. 

Binghamton will play DePaul University in the second day of competition at the Buffalo Invite tomorrow, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. inside University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena.
