Volleyball Defeated by DePaul 3-1

Ilieva, Cohen post double-doubles in loss

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Binghamton University volleyball team (3-2) dropped a 3-1 match to  DePaul University (12-25, 25-19, 16-25, 20-25) in its second game of the Buffalo Invite. 

Tsvetelina Ilieva posted her second double-double of the weekend with a team-high 17 kills and 16 digs, along with one service ace. Setter Danit Cohen also posted double digits in two stat categories for the second time this season with 19 assists and 11 digs.

Misa Dlouha had an impressive outing for the Bearcats with 11 kills, four block assists, one block solo and three service aces for a .474 hitting percentage. Lydia Adam and Anna Sprys added four block assists apiece. Madison Konopka led BU in digs with a season-high 18.

Binghamton and DePaul started the first set neck and neck before the Blue Demons recorded six straight points to make the frame 9-4. DU pulled away quickly, scoring twice as many points as BU to claim the set 25-12.

The second set was the Bearcats sole win of the afternoon. Binghamton led for the entirety of the stanza, with DePaul only tying up the score twice early on in the set. BU began to increase its advantage after 14-10 with six consecutive points to bring the score to 19-11. The Blue Demons added eight more points before the Bearcats won the frame 25-19. 

Ilieva collected five kills and three digs in the second set while Dlouha grabbed four kills, one  block assist and one block solo for 7.5 points. 

BU's third set went similarly to the first with an even start before DePaul widened the gap midway through and won the frame 25-16. 

The four set was the most competitive of the match, featuring eight ties and two lead changes. After an even score at 14 apiece, the Blue Demons notched seven straight points to make the set 21-14. The Bearcats attempted to come back with four consecutive to bring it to 21-18 but were unable to clinch, dropping the frame 25-20.

Binghamton is back in action tomorrow, Sept. 2, at 3 p.m. with a match against the hosts University at Buffalo to close out the Buffalo Invite.
