Volleyball Drops Two Five Set Thrillers Saturday

Bearcats fall to .500 through 12 games

STORRS, Conn. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton University volleyball team (6-6) fell to an  even record on the season after losing two five set matches in the University of Connecticut's Dog Pound Challenge Saturday.

BU dropped a tough first match to Brown 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12) before losing a second five setter to hosts UConn 3-2 (28-26, 23-25, 25-15, 18-25, 6-15) inside Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.

GAME ONE

In its five set match against Brown, Binghamton led its opponent in aces with five to the Bears' two. The Bearcats also registered four times as many blocks with 12 through five frames.

Lottie Scully nabbed her first double-double of the fall, tenth of her career, with 41 assists and 16 digs. Her 16 digs ties her career-high in the category set against Georgetown last season.

Tsvetelina Ilieva posted her sixth double-double this season with a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs against Brown, along with a season-best five blocks for 17 points.

Ella Schabort followed close behind with 12 kills at .257 for 13 points. Misa Dlouha added an additional 13 points from seven kills at .313, two service aces and five blocks, with a career-high three solo blocks.

Madison Konopka and Brenda Reynaga governed the back row for the Bearcats with 21 and 13 digs, respectively.

After dropping the first set by five 25-20, Binghamton came back to take the next two sets 25-19 and 25-22. The second and third frames featured 12 tie scores and four lead changes yet the Bearcats were still able to pull off impressive stanza victories.

Binghamton went on four separate 3-0 or better runs in the second frame, fueled by four of Ilieva's kills and two apiece by Schabort and Scully. The Bearcats had just one 3-0 run in the third frame to lead 9-8 early on before notching two consecutive points to close out the set 25-22.

Unable to hold onto its 2-1 lead, Binghamton lost the next two sets to Brown 25-18 and 15-12. Ilieva and Lydia Adam registered four and three kills respectively in the final two frames.

GAME TWO

The Bearcats topped the Huskies in just one statistical category with nine blocks to the host's seven, led by Sprys' team-high six. The senior middle blocker also registered a season best 11 kills for 14.5 points.

Scully recorded her second double-double of the night with 39 assists and 11 digs, the eleventh of her BU career.

Ilieva notched a team-high in kills for the second straight game with an impressive 23, her second 20+ kill performance of the season after making 27 successful attack attempts at Delaware State.

Reynaga posted a career high 28 digs as the libero for Binghamton while Sydney Aguirre tallied a season-best 11 digs from the back row.

Binghamton took a close first set over Connecticut 28-26 to start its second match of the day. In a frame that included 11 tie scores and three lead changes, a kill from Ilieva saved a set point at 26-25 while another successful attack from the senior sealed the frame for the Bearcats at 28-26.

BU played a competitive set in the second, dropping the stanza by just two points 25-33. Binghamton's most dominant frame was its 10-point third set victory over Connecticut. The Bearcats biggest lead of the night came at 21-10 in the third frame before the team closed it out at 25-15.

Adam, Ilieva and Sprys grabbed three kills apiece in the third set to give Binghamton the 10 point win. BU held its opponents to a -.069 hitting percentage in the frame while attacking at a .219 clip themselves

The Huskies flipped the script in the fourth set, jumping out to an early lead that couldn't be overcome by the Bearcats. While Ilieva recorded five kills in the set, UConn claimed the frame 25-18 to push the match to a deciding set.

The final set went the way of Binghamton's opponents once again with Connecticut taking the final stanza 15-6.

Binghamton will play Michigan State tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 17 on the final day of fall invitational play. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
