Volleyball Defeated by Michigan State 3-1

Loss drops the Bearcats below .500 for the first time this season

STORRS, Conn. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton University volleyball team (6-7) dropped a 3-1 (12-25, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25) match to Michigan State on the final day of competition at the UConn Dog Pound Challenge Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Bearcats below .500 for the first time this season. 

Michigan State led BU in every statistical category except blocks where the Bearcats tied the Spartans with each team registering six blocks apiece. 

Tsvetelina Ilieva led the way for Binghamton, recording a team-hgh 14 kills at a .400 with five digs and a block. Ella Schabort followed her teammate with nine kills and a service ace. 

Lydia Adam made three kills and three blocks while Misa Dlouha collected two kills and a team-best four blocks. Anna Sprys and Lottie Scully also added two kills apiece. 

Scully nabbed 24 assists at setter and posted a team-high eight digs. Brenda Reynaga and Madison Konopka notched six and five digs, respectively, from the back row for the Bearcats. Reynaga also collected a team-best three aces in the loss. 

Binghamton got off to a slow start, losing the first set to Michigan State 25-12 after the Spartans went on two runs of 5-0 or better to lead 22-10 before closing out the frame. 

The highlight of the Bearcats' afternoon was their two-point second set victory 25-23. In a frame that featured 10 tie scores and six lead changes, BU recorded two 3-0 runs before the final two sequences when Reynaga made back-to-back service aces and claimed the stanza win for Binghamton. 

The Spartans came back with a vengeance, taking the next two sets 25-19 to earn the 3-1 win over the Bearcats. 

Next up, Binghamton will host Colgate University for a midweek non-conference match-up, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. in the West Gym. Start time is slated for 6 p.m.
