Volleyball Sweeps NJIT to Open Conference Play

Ilieva posts seventh double-double of the season in victory

NEWARK, N.J. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton University volleyball team (7-8, 1-0) opened up America East play with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 26-24) sweep of NJIT (6-9, 0-1) Friday night inside the Wellness and Events Center. 

BU commanded the match, owning the advantage in points, 58-42, kills, 48-32, and digs 55-48. Two Bearcats, in Tsvetelina Ilieva and Ella Schabort, posted double digit kills while three earned hitting percentages over .300. 

IIieva's team-high 20 kills and 19 digs, at a .348 hitting percentage, made it the senior's seventh double-double of the season. Schabort followed her teammate with 14 kills at .393 with two service aces. Anna Sprys added five kills at an impressive .500 clip. 

Lottie Scully recorded 28 assists for Binghamton at setter while Danit Cohen added 13 helpersto add to the tally. Brenda Reynaga and Madison Konopka governed the back row for BU with nine and eight digs, respectively.

Both teams traded points to start the match before the Highlanders went on a 4-0 run to jump ahead 9-6. NJIT continued to add to its advantage with two more 3-0 runs to lead the frame 15-10. Binghamton fought back, recording four straight points to equalize the set at 18-18. 

Kills from four different Bearcats, Sprys, Schabort, Misa Dlouha and Lydia Adam, brought the Bearcats ahead by three at 22-19. The Highlanders were able to tack on one more point before BU closed out the set with three consecutive points, 25-20. 

Binghamton showed their abilities in the second set, overcoming an eight point deficit to stay ahead of the home team. NJIT jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the stanza, furthering that lead all the way to 17-9 before the Bearcats bounced back with a 5-0 run to cut the Highlanders lead to three. 

BU ran it back again, notching yet another 5-0 run to take back the set at 19-18. NJIT added four more but were unable to stop the Bearcats' momentum as they took the second frame 25-22. 

Binghamton entered its most competitive set in the third which featured 13 tie scores and five lead changes. Both teams went back and forth before BU put together a 5-0 run to step ahead 13-9. The Highlanders weren't backing down, scoring four straight to take back the lead at 20-19. 

The teams traded the lead once again until two consecutive kills from Ilieva gave the Bearcats match point at 24-23. A kill kept the Highlanders in the contest before Binghamton registered two straight points and won the set 26-24 and the match 3-0. 

Next up, the Bearcats will host conference opponents New Hampshire Friday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. and Bryant Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. in back-to-back matches inside the Events Center.
