HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton golf team wrapped up its first event of the season Sunday with an 11th place finish at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational at Seven Oaks Golf Club.
In the competition, hosted by Colgate, the Bearcats battled against 12 other teams over the course of two days. Fifth year golfer
Evan Sitts recorded the lowest score for Binghamton at 223/7-over par, good enough for him to finish in a tie for 24th out of 82 golfers on the individual leaderboard.
"There were a few positives," said Binghamton Head Coach
Bernie Herceg. "Conditions were maybe a little bit tougher with the wind. But overall, the season has started, and it's good to kind of see where the guys' games are at under competition levels to see what we need to work on."
Sitts was among six golfers to compete for Binghamton over the weekend. Joining him on the course were juniors
Ryan Millevoi and
Sean Shen, sophomores
Harrison Blech and
Brandon Conner, and freshman
Jackson Vesper, who made his collegiate debut.
For the first round, Conner and Vesper led the Bearcats by each shooting a 74/2-over par. Both golfers finished with three birdies in the round. Millevoi carded a 76/4-over par for the round, while both Sitts and Shen finished at 77/5-over par. Blech wrapped up the round with a 79/7-over par.
Sitts moved up the leaderboard in the second round with a 70/2-under par. He recorded six birdies in the round, including three over four holes on the back nine. His 70 is the lowest score he has posted in a round since the final round of the 2022 Big Sky Championships, when he also shot 70.
"The second round, he [Sitts] really played solid," said Herceg. "Putted really good. Struck the ball well. So, it was an awesome second round."
Conner, meanwhile, continued his consistent play with a 73/1-over par, putting both him and Sitts in a tie for 18th heading into the final round. Blech shot a 76/4-over par, Millevoi and Shen both shot a 78/6-over par, and Vesper finished the second round with an 81/9-over par.
For the final round on Sunday, Sitts wrapped up his weekend with a 76/4-over par. Millevoi also finished the round with the same score, giving him a total tally of 230/14-over par, good enough to help him finish tied for 48th. Conner ended the day with a 78/6-over par to finish 27th. Shen ended his weekend with his second 77/5-over par to help him finish tied for 59
th at 232/16-over par. Vesper improved from his second round performance with a 78/6-over par on Sunday. He finished tied for 62nd at 233/17-over par. Finally, Blech carded an 83/11-over par to finish tied for 70th at 238/22-over par. Binghamton's final overall score was 905/41-over par.
