Liam Ferris Records First Collegiate Hat Trick in Loss to Lafayette

Colin Delay scores career-high two goals, Gage Adams and Matthew Keegan also score twice

EASTON, Pa. – Liam Ferris scored his first hat trick of his collegiate career, but the Binghamton men's lacrosse team was defeated by Lafayette 19-12 Saturday at Fisher Stadium.

Colin Delay also recorded his first career multi-goal game with two goals for Binghamton (1-2), while Gage Adams and Matthew Keegan also scored twice. Meanwhile, Lafayette (3-1) had six goals from Charlie Cunniffe, five from John Mathes and three by Peter Lehman. Cunniffe also added four assists to finish the game with 10 points.

The Leopards jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter with goals by Mathes and Kalman Kraham. The Bearcats responded when Keegan scored his sixth goal in three games off a turnover to bring the Bearcats within one. Lafayette would score the next four goals to end the first up 6-1.

After Lafayette began the second quarter with another two goals, Ferris scored his first goal of the game after Keegan set him up with a pass from behind the net. After Mathes scored again for the Leopards, Ferris responded with his second goal of the game to make the score 9-3. Adams would score his first goal later in the quarter, while Dan Garone, who made his second collegiate start, scored his fifth career goal with two seconds remaining in the first half. But during that span, the Leopards added three more goals to take a 12-5 lead into halftime.

Binghamton came out in the second half by holding Lafayette to its lowest-scoring quarter of the day at three goals. Meanwhile, with seven minutes left in the quarter, Ferris secured his hat trick in style by cutting in front of the net and firing the ball in as he fell. Delay soon followed with his first goal of the game at the 5:08 mark, with an assist by Adams.

Down 15-7 heading into the fourth quarter, Binghamton made one last charge. After giving up the opening goal of the period, the Bearcats scored three straight goals of their own, their largest scoring run of the game. Delay added his second goal of the day, followed by goals from Sonny Imburgia and Will Feldmann. Feldmann's goal was the first of the season and the third of the sophomore's career. Adams and Keegan would each get their second goal of the game later in the quarter, but it would not be enough as the Leopards scored three more goals to lock up the win.

Other Highlights
  • Declan Ferris, Max Napoli and Ross Chazanow each led the Bearcats with five ground balls. That is the second-highest total any Bearcat has recorded this season, behind Chazanow's six against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 17. As a team, the Bearcats collected a season-high 28 ground balls.
  • With Delay's first goal coming with the Bearcats up a man, Binghamton has now scored at least one goal up a player in their last seven games dating back to 2023.
  • Seven different Bearcats caused one turnover. That is the largest number of Binghamton players to record that statistic in a game so far this season.
  • In his first appearance at the faceoff X for his collegiate career, freshman CJ Mangio won his first three faceoff attempts in the fourth quarter. Mangio won four out of seven faceoff attempts during the game. Chazanow, meanwhile, won 12 attempts, bringing his total for the season up to 41. He has won at least 11 faceoffs in every game so far this year.
