RICHMOND, Va. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team got off to a quick start in their first game against a ranked opponent this season, but No. 15 Richmond (3-2) came away with a 19-10 win over the Bearcats (1-3) Saturday at Robins Stadium.
Gage Adams scored three goals for his first hat trick of the season, while
Connor Winters made a season-high 14 saves in goal. But Richmond, who entered the game with the ninth-best scoring offense in the country, scored 17 of its 19 goals in the final three quarters to pull away for the win.
Binghamton began the game trailing 1-0 after Richmond's Dalton Young scored at 12:30 in the first quarter, extending his goal-scoring streak to 30 games and his point streak to 46 games. It would take not one, but two quick sequences for the Bearcats to take the lead. Binghamton would first get two goals on the man advantage from
Matthew Keegan and
Declan Ferris 14 seconds apart to go up 2-1 at 10:37. The other fast-paced sequence came a few minutes later.
After a save was made by Winters on one end of the field, Binghamton raced down to the other end in transition where
Aaron Tebo, who assisted on Ferris' goal, scored his second tally of the season to extend Binghamton's lead to 3-1. On the ensuing faceoff,
Ross Chazanow took the ball and sprinted towards the net to fire in his first goal of the season just six seconds after Tebo's goal. Both teams would trade a goal over the remainder of the quarter, with
Thomas Kelly scoring his first collegiate goal for the Bearcats, as Binghamton took a 5-2 lead over the nationally ranked Spiders into the second quarter.
Both of Binghamton's goals in the second quarter came courtesy of Adams, with the latter coming with the Bearcats up a man with seven seconds remaining in the half. Richmond would post six goals in that quarter to go ahead 8-7 heading into halftime.
The Spiders would begin pulling away in the third quarter when they scored a game-high eight goals over the course of those 15 minutes. Adams secured his hat trick with 12:15 left in the quarter after being set up near the net by Keegan. Ethan Insigna, who made his first appearance on the field since Binghamton's season opener against Jacksonville on Feb. 10, scored a goal in his return at 5:14.
Binghamton would get one more goal in the fourth quarter, when
Dan Garone put his sixth tally of the season into the back of the net with 2:35 remaining in regulation. Richmond would add three more goals in the quarter to take home the victory. Luke Grayum ended up scoring seven goals for the Spiders, and Young added three.
