Liam Ferris’ Overtime Heroics Help Men’s Lacrosse Defeat Mount St. Mary’s

Ferris’ third goal of the game snaps two-game losing streak for the Bearcats

EMMITSBURG, Md. – For the second time this season, the Binghamton men's lacrosse team came away with a 13-12 victory in overtime. This time, it was Liam Ferris who scored the game-winning goal to help the Bearcats (2-3) defeat Mount St. Mary's (0-6) Tuesday at Waldron Family Stadium.

The senior's third goal of the night came with 54 seconds remaining in extra period after he spun around a defender in the offensive zone and fired his shot into the back of the net for the final tally of the night. That goal was made possible after Matthew Keegan scored the game-tying goal with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to even the score at 12. It was his fifth goal of the game, a season high for the junior.

"It's a good feeling to end the trip with a win," said Binghamton Head Coach Kevin McKeown. "I was proud of how we kept persevering, even when things didn't go our way. Liam and Matt both came up in the clutch, and I thought our defense got some big stops late to help us get to the end."

Tuesday's game proved to be a back-and-forth contest from the beginning. Keegan scored his first two goals in the opening quarter, with Colin Delay assisting the first one. The Mountaineers would answer with goals by Will McKay and Ian Plott.

In the second quarter, Binghamton seemed to pull away by scoring the first three goals of the frame. At the 13:25 mark, Max Napoli began the scoring run by taking the ball and from the defensive end of the field, sprinting down to the other end, and firing in what would be his first goal since March 19, 2022 against Albany. Just over a minute later, up a man, Ethan Insinga got the ball to Delay who scored his second goal on the man advantage this season, and fifth overall. Keegan would go on to complete his second hat trick of the season at 10:05 after collecting a ground ball off a turnover near midfield and running right at the net before scoring his third goal of the day.

But Mount St. Mary's would respond with five unanswered goals, each from a different player. Nathanael Merchant, Gavin Schaffer, Ben Schuster, Brody Atkinson, Cormac Giblin helped bring the Moutaineers to a 7-5 lead with 2:01 remaining in the half. Binghamton would get one back courtesy of Ethan Insinga with 51 seconds remaining, and the Bearcats would go into halftime down 7-6.

Atkinson began the third quarter by scoring two more goals to give Mount St. Mary's another three-goal lead at 9-6. To get Binghamton back into the game, Gage Adams found the back of the net for the first time in the game at 3:37 in the quarter. 35 seconds later, Ferris joined in on the fun with his first goal of the game. He would score again at 2:18 to tie the game at nine. Dan Bradley would give Mount St. Mary's the lead again with a goal at 1:07, and Binghamton would enter the fourth quarter down 10-9.

Binghamton would have to show its resilience once again in the fourth. Atkinson would score his fourth goal of the game to extend the Mountaineers lead to 11-9 with 11:24 remaining. Keegan and Adams each scored after that to tie the game at 11 with 7:02 remaining. Giblin would put the Mountaineers ahead with a diving goal in front of the net at the 2:57 mark. It then appeared that Will Feldmann tied the game with just under two minutes remaining, but he was called for a crease violation.

Binghamton would get the ball back with about 30 seconds remaining after a clock violation by the Mountaineers. After calling a timeout following a successful clear attempt, Sonny Imburgia got the ball to Keegan, who then navigated his way to the front of the net and was able to shoot the ball into the goal before stepping into the crease. The Bearcats would get the game to overtime, where Ferris would win it just minutes later.
