Box Score BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton women's tennis team (1-6, 1-3) earned its first win of the season over Merrimack, 4-3, inside the Lane-Starke Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
The win marks the first conference victory for the Bearcats as new members of the Northeast Conference (NEC).
"I'm glad the ladies were able to pull out the win, " said Head Coach Libby McGovern. "They really worked for it. Put a lot of balls in play and were willing and able to change their game plans when necessary. We need to continue to build and progress from this match."
After the Warriors claimed the doubles point early in the match, BU earned four singles wins to give Binghamton the, 4-3 team win.
Abby Ackroyd and Samantha Jaros recorded their first doubles victory together in the third position, taking down Merrimack, 6-4.
Binghamton opened up individual play strong with three straight wins at sixth, fifth and second singles.
Jaros, in the No. 6 spot, notched her first victory of the spring after going up 6-0, 2-0 before her opponent retired. Nitya Vyas and Caterina Casadei followed up their teammates' win with ones of their own, earning 6-4, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-1, straight set victories over the Warriors.
With losses at first and third singles, Maria Pereira's tight, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win at fourth singles sealed the team victory in favor of the Bearcats, 4-3.
Next up, Binghamton travels to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure, Friday, Feb. 9. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
