Women’s Tennis Prepares for NEC Championship

Bearcats seeded eighth, slated for first round match against Merrimack

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (BUBearcats.com) - The Binghamton women's tennis team (1-18, 1-6) is slated to compete in the Northeast Conference Championship, Friday, April 12, at the Mercer County Tennis Center.

The Bearcats are seeded eighth and slated for a first round match-up against No.9 Merrimack at 8:30 a.m. The conference tournament is the first Binghamton will compete in since 2016 when the team was still a member of the America East.

BU claimed its sole victory of the season over Merrimack, 4-3, inside the Lane-Starke Tennis Center, Feb. 4. The win marked the first conference victory for the Bearcats as first-year members of the NEC.

After the Warriors claimed the doubles point early in the match, BU earned four singles wins to give Binghamton the, 4-3 team win. Abby Ackroyd and Samantha Jaros recorded their first doubles victory together in the third position, taking down Merrimack, 6-4.

Jaros, in the No. 6 spot, notched her first victory of the spring after going up 6-0, 2-0 before her opponent retired. Nitya Vyas and Caterina Casadei followed up their teammates' win with ones of their own, earning 6-4, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-1, straight set victories over the Warriors.

With losses at first and third singles, Maria Pereira's tight, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win at fourth singles sealed the team victory in favor of the Bearcats, 4-3.

Loren Cuomo leads Binghamton with six singles victories this season. Ackroyd and Vyas follow their teammate with three singles wins each. Jaros and Casadei have posted two individual victories while Pereira has one.

The winner of Saturday morning's first round match will advance to the quarterfinals against No.1 Sacred Heart at 2 p.m.
