BU scores 21 runs in first five innings, keeps playoff position

Box Score ORONO, Maine – Binghamton baseball (17-22, 7-11 America East) exploded for 21 runs on 19 hits and captured the final game of the weekend series with a 21-4 drubbing of Maine (10-29, 6-8 AE) Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. The win allowed BU to remain in playoff position, a half-game ahead of UAlbany with six games remaining in the regular season.

The Bearcats scored five runs in the first and then sent 14 to the plate in the second and scored 10 runs on nine hits. Binghamton kept up the onslaught with two runs in each of the next three innings before going scoreless over the final four frames.

The run support was plenty for graduate starter Spencer Howell (W, 1-1), who worked 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

Offensively, eight different players collected RBIs and BU totaled eight extra-base hits.

Junior third baseman Devan Bade went 4-for-4 with a double, solo home run (2nd of season) and four RBI. Junior catcher Evin Sullivan went 4-for-6 with a triple, two-run home run (2nd of season) and four RBI. Sophomore right fielder Zach Rogacki ripped a three-run home run (2nd of season) and went 3-for-6. Senior center fielder Tommy Reifler had two hits and two RBI.

Binghamton hosts Cornell at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday – the first of four straight non-conference games.

NOTES
The 10-run second inning marked the second time this season BU plated 10 or more in an inning (12 vs. Middle Tennessee on March 30) ... The 21 runs were the most against an America East opponent since BU beat Hartford 26-8 on May 1, 2010.
