Volleyball Earns First-Ever Big Ten Win at Rutgers

Bearcats go 2-0 against Power Four opponents, grab fifth straight victory

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (BinghamtonBearcats.com) - Binghamton Volleyball (6-3) swept Rutgers (3-5), 3-0, to start off the Rutgers Invitational Thursday night inside Jersey Mike's Arena.

The win marks the fifth straight victory for the Bearcats and first  in program history over a Big Ten opponent. The win is also the second Power Four victory this season after Binghamton beat Boston College, 3-2, Sept. 7.

"I am very proud of the performance we put out on the floor tonight," said Head Coach Allie Yaeger. "We played simple and smart. When we needed points we played error free and executed the game plan. We continue to take steps forward and work together to win as a team."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Hitting a team-high .371 in the first frame, Binghamton jumped out to a 5-1 lead until the Scarlet Knights went on 11-3 run to grab the edge, 15-11. The Bearcats used five kills and a service ace to take back the advantage, 19-18, and continued to add on until Tsvetelina Ilieva sealed the stanza with a kill, 25-22.

Binghamton started hot once again with a 5-0 run to begin the second set. The Bearcats held onto the advantage for the remainder of the frame and led by five or more twice, at 11-5 and 21-16. Two Rutgers attack errors gave Binghamton a set point at 24-20 before the Scarlet Knights put up four straight to send the stanza into extras. The Bearcats didn't sweat and closed out the set 26-24 with a kill and a block from Ilieva and Johanna Remy

The final frame was the most competitive of the night with match-high 15 tie scores and seven lead changes. Both teams stayed within one point until a 4-0 Rutgers run gave the Scarlet Knights a 15-11 edge. The Bearcats recorded five consecutive points to come within one, 17-18, and kept fighting until they tied the stanza at 23 apiece. The opponents went back, with Binghamton saving a Rutgers set point, before a service ace from Danit Cohen ended the final set 28-26.
