Volleyball Drops Road Match to Cornell

Ilieva, Schabort post double-digit kills in loss

ITHACA, N.Y. (BinghamtonBearcats.com) - Binghamton Volleyball (7-4) fell to Cornell (5-2), 3-1, Wednesday night inside Newman Arena at Bartels Hall. The loss snaps a six-match Bearcat win streak going back to Sept. 6. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
Cornell recorded five straight points to start the first set before Binghamton put together a 8-0 to establish the lead, 10-6. The Big Red held the Bearcats to just two points in 11 scores to retake the advantage, 15-12. Binghamton used three, 3-0 runs to go up 23-19 then closed out the set with a CU service error and an ace from Viktoria Dimitrova, 25-20. 

Despite the first frame victory, the Bearcats dropped the final three sets to the Big Red 25-22, 25-20 and 25-18. Binghamton hit a team-best .348 in the third stanza, outhitting Cornell's .222. The Bearcats also registered four blocks in the third set to CU's one. 

MATCH NOTES 
  • Tsvetelina Ilieva earned a team-high 18 kills at a .400 clip against Cornell, her eighth straight match with double-digit kills this fall and fifth time hitting .300 or better. With 12 digs on the night, Ilieva recorded her third double-double this season and the 22nd in her career. 
  • Ella Schabort notched 11 kills in her sixth consecutive match with double-digits to bring her season total to 98. 
  • Emily Cronkhite tallied a team-best 13 digs from the back row to average 3.10 digs per set so far this fall. The total was Cronkhite's sixth double-digit digs performance in a Bearcat uniform.
  • Lottie Scully registered 28 assists in the loss, her sixth straight match with 20 or more helpers. Scully has recorded 20 or more assists in all but two contests for Binghamton this season.
