Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to West Virginia, 3-2

Ilieva matches career-high with 27 kills across five sets

BRONX, N.Y. (binghamtonbearcats.com) - Binghamton Volleyball (8-5) fell to West Virginia, 3-2, in its final match of Fordham's Rose Hill Classic Friday afternoon inside Rose Hill Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
Both opponents stayed within three points of each other the entirety of the first frame which featured 21 tie scores and eight lead changes. The Bearcats used a late 3-0 run to force a set point, 24-21, before WVU notched three straight to tie it up. Binghamton continued to push back in extra play, registering kills from Tsvetelina Ilieva and Ella Schabort to take the set, 35-33. 

The second set was as tight as the first until the Bearcats registered a 4-1 run to lead by four, 14-10. West Virginia scored 11 of the next 13 points to reclaim the edge, 21-16, and won the frame with three consecutive points, 25-20. 

The Mountaineers grabbed an early 10-6 advantage in the third set before the Bearcats put up four straight to tie the frame. Both teams went back and forth until a 4-0 run to lead 18-13. Binghamton kept at it, winning seven points to WVU's eight to extend its lead to 24-21. The Mountaineers grabbed two more scores before a kill from Viktoria Dimitrova sealed the set, 25-23, for the Bearcats. 

After Binghamton started up 5-1 in the fourth set, West Virginia came back to dominate the frame, 25-17. The Mountaineers recorded 14 kills to the Bearcats eight in the stanza while outhitting Binghamton .345 to .065. 

WVU closed the door on Binghamton in the final frame, winning the fifth set 15-12. The Bearcats initially led the set 12-9 before the Mountaineers registered five straight points to claim the match 3-2. 

MATCH NOTES 
  • Ilieva matched her career-high with 27 kills in the loss, her second match this season with 20 or more kills after recording 20 vs. Hofstra, Sept. 11. The performance was her tenth straight match with double-digit kills.  
  • Schabort notched 11 kills and 14 digs against the Mountaineers for her second double-double of the season, her first coming in the 3-2 win over Boston College, Sept. 7. The match was her eighth consecutive performance in double-digits to bring her season kills total to 119. 
  • Dimitrova was the third Bearcat to reach double-digit kills with 11 against the Mountaineers, just the second double-digit performance for the freshman after she registered 14 kills vs. Villanova, Sept. 4. 
  • Lottie Scully recorded a season-high 37 assists in the loss, her third match this fall with 30 or more assists. Scully ranks second in the America East with 6.75 assists per set. 
  • Johanna Remy posted a season-high seven blocks on six assists and one block solo to lead the Bearcats at net 
  • Emily Cronkhite tallied a team-best 19 digs from the back row to average 3.27 digs per set so far this fall. The total was Cronkhite's eighth double-digit digs performance in a Bearcat uniform.

Next up, Binghamton heads north on I-81 for a midweek match against Le Moyne, Tuesday, Sept. 24. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
