ITHACA, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore Brian Luciano won the men's weight throw with the 21st-best distance in the nation, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the Cornell/Upstate Challenge on Saturday at Barton Hall. The Bearcats posted three other individual winners at the non-scoring meet.
Luciano's distance of 69-6 ¾ broke his own school record of 67-10 ½, which he set last season when he won the event at the America East Indoor Championships. The distance marks his highest national ranking in an event during his collegiate career. Luciano has now won the weight throw in both meets Binghamton has taken part in this indoor season.
Binghamton's top performer on the women's side on Saturday was graduate student Jenna Chan, who won the 60 hurdles for the second time in as many meets. Her first-place time of 8.44 tied her own school record, which she set back in December at the season-opening Greg Page Relays.
Also on the women's side, fellow graduate student Gianna Hoose captured the women's weight throw for the second time this season. Her distance of 57-1 is her personal best and ranks second all-time in Binghamton program history.
The Bearcats final individual winner was sophomore Liam Cody, who was first in the men's 3,000 (8:46.80).
Runner-up performances on the men's side were turned in by sophomore Marcus Nahim in the 60 (6.87), senior Joey Cardascia in the 300 (35.08) and sophomore Matthew Oluwole in the high jump (6-8).
Second-place finishes on the women's side was recorded by junior Alyssa Armitage in the pole vault (12-5 ½) and sophomore Deborah Estabine in the weight throw (52-8 ¾).
Up next for Binghamton is the Bucknell/Gulden Invitational this coming Saturday.
