Men's basketball succumbs to Pitt 103-63

Lilley collects another double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds; Blackburn sparks with 12 points

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – ACC host Pitt (6-6) bookended the two halves with a 42-9 run and pinned a 103-63 loss on visiting Binghamton men's basketball (3-9) Wednesday night at Petersen Events Center.

Binghamton was undone in a brief 11-minute segment that bridged the two halves. The decisive run spanned the final five minutes of the first half and the first six minutes of the second. Over the other 29 minutes of the game, the Bearcats played to within seven points (61-54).

"They shot the ball really well," head coach Levell Sanders said. "We battled on the glass but turnovers did us in. Pitt dominated the paint with their size and physicality. For some stretches were held our own but ultimately we were outmatched."

Pitt drilled 16-of-27 from 3-point range (59%) and scored 33 points off Bearcat turnovers.

Senior center Demetrius Lilley notched his conference-leading eighth double-double (in 10 games) with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Lilley ranks among the top-3 in the nation in doubles and top-15 in rebounds.

In just his second collegiate game, freshman forward Jake Blackburn hit 4-of-4 from beyond the arc for 12 points. Junior point guard Jeremiah Quigley added 12 points and four assists.

Binghamton fell behind 14-2 in the opening five minutes before settling in. Over the next 10 minutes, the Bearcats outscored Pitt 26-17 and a 3-pointer from Blackburn brought the Bearcats to within three, 31-28, with just 5:48 left in the first half. But the Panthers hit a barrage of 3-pointers and poured in 26 points in the final 5+ minutes. Pitt used the big closing run to build a 57-34 halftime bulge.

After the initial five-minute struggle, the Bearcats shot 60 percent the rest of the way, but Pitt countered by shooting a sizzling 70 percent for the half and the Panthers drained 10-of-16 from beyond the arc.

In the second half, Pitt opened with a 16-3 run and the Bearcats couldn't keep up their first-half shooting. Junior guard Bryson Wilson scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

Binghamton continues its trek through Western Pennsylvania with a Saturday afternoon game at Mercyhurst.
