VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior forward
Zyier Beverly scored 20 of his game-high 25 points after halftime and Binghamton men's basketball (3-6) outscored visiting Lehigh (3-7) 13-4 in overtime to prevail 80-71 Tuesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The Bearcats put four (of their six players) in double figures, shot a season-high 59 percent and sank 22 free throws to win in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The game was delayed an hour after Lehigh experienced travel delays amid the snowfall.
The game featured 10 ties and nine lead changes, the final of which came early in overtime when Beverly sank a free throw. The Bearcats wound up converting 9-of-12 from the line in the extra session and on the other end, limited Lehigh to 1-of-9 shooting from the floor in the final five minutes.
"Shoutout to Coach Reed and Lehigh ... they went through a lot to get here tonight," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "I thought we played with urgency, paid attention to details and left everything out on the court. Jeremiah (Quigley) can get anywhere he wants on the floor and Zyier (Beverly) was tremendous tonight. It was a hard-fought victory and one that can propel us and show the heart and grit we need to play with consistently."
Junior point guard
Jeremiah Quigley tallied a career-high 22 points, five rebounds and four assists and played the entire 45 minutes. He hit 7-of-10 from the floor and forced overtime with a free throw make with four seconds left in regulation. Senior center
Demetrius Lilley notched his league-leading sixth double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He ranks third in the nation in double-doubles and is among the top-15 rebounders.
Beverly hit 9-of-11 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line for his career-high point total. He added three steals and a block in 42 minutes. Graduate guard
Jackson Benigni added 13 points. After missing three games with an injury, senior guard Wes Peterson played 38 minutes and posted a game-best plus/minus of +19.
Neither team led by more than seven points throughout regulation. The score was tied at half 38-38 after Quigley banked in an off-balance 17-footer at the buzzer. Fast forward to late in the second and it was still even, this time at 58-58 with 3:32, when Beverly took charge. He scored six points in a 2:34 span, including a thunderous alley-oop from Quigley that rattled the basket stanchion. Nursing a 66-61 lead in the final 50 seconds, however, the Bearcats surrendered back-to-back 3-pointers and found themselves down 67-66 in the closing seconds of regulation. But with time winding down, Quigley was fouled driving to the hoop and made 1-of-2 free throws to send the game to overtime, where they secured their third home win in four tries.
The Bearcats continue their three-game homestand by hosting Le Moyne in the "Battle for the Interstate" at 4 p.m. Saturday, following the 2 p.m. women's game against Buffalo.
