Men second, women sixth halfway through championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Elijah Lanfear repeated as the men's 50 free champion and freshman Cameron Stetzer captured the men's 200 IM, highlighting Binghamton's performance during Day Two of the America East Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday evening at the VMI Aquatic Center. With two days remaining in the meet, the Bearcat men are second out of six teams while the women are sixth out of seven squads.

Lanfear clocked a first-place time of 19.75 in the 50 free - just .13 seconds ahead of runner-up Oliver Gassmann of UMBC. Lanfear now has a pair of titles so far during the meet, having been part of the winning 800 free relay team on Wednesday.

Stetzer, meanwhile, recorded a winning time of 1:48.71 to become the first Binghamton freshman to win an America East title since 2021. His winning margin was .40 seconds ahead of second-place Joey Stauss of Maine.

The Bearcats nearly claimed a third individual title as fellow freshman Evan Peters was second in the 500 free with a school-record time of 4:22.74. In a neck-and-neck battle, however, first-place honors went to Ilias El Fallaki of NJIT (4:21.99). Still, Peters broke the previous Binghamton record of 4:22.80, which was set by David Holmes back in 2007. In addition, he topped the previous Binghamton freshman record of 4:26.95 - set by current junior Liam Preston in 2022.

Preston was fifth in the 500 free on Thursday (4:29.70) and was followed by sophomore Harrison Lambert in sixth place (4:30.59).

Other finalists for Binghamton on the men's side on Thursday included junior Max Kaback, who was sixth in the 200 IM (1:51.69), freshman Tyler Schultz, who was eighth in the 200 IM (1:52.08) as well as fellow freshman Jacob Koclanis, who was sixth in the three-meter diving competition (273.00).

Koclanis concluded his first trip to the America East Championships with a pair of appearances in the finals. He also placed sixth in the men's one-meter diving event Wednesday evening.

The top women's finisher for Binghamton on Thursday evening was junior Maria Pignatelli, who was sixth in the 50 free (23.55). It marked her second straight finals appearance in that event, having placed seventh last year.

UMBC remains in first place in the men's team standings with 324.5 points. Binghamton is second with 284 points followed by Bryant in third place with 241.5 points.

On the women's side, defending champion Vermont moved into first place with 259 points. New Hampshire is second (239), followed by Bryant (230), UMBC (175), Maine (144) and Binghamton (136).

Day three at the America East Swimming & Diving Championships begins Friday at 10 a.m.
