Men’s Lacrosse Defeated in Close Battle With Marist

Liam Ferris records second hat trick in as many games this season for the Bearcats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sean Mullan scored the game-winning goal as time expired for Marist, as the Binghamton men's lacrosse team (0-2) fell to the Red Foxes 10-9 Saturday at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.

Liam Ferris posted his second hat trick in as many games this season for the Bearcats as he led the team with three goals. Dan Garone added another two tallies for Binghamton, while Connor Winters made 10 saves in goal.

Binghamton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to goals by Ferris and Drew Filanowski. A strike by Gage Adams a few minutes later extended the Bearcats lead to 3-0 with 6:30 remaining in the opening frame. Steven Cain put Marist (2-1) on the board later in the quarter with a goal on the man-advantage, as both teams entered the second quarter with the Bearcats up 3-1.

Following a goal by Mullan for the Red Foxes, the Bearcats responded with a man-up tally from Ferris, and then Garone's first goal of the day. Marist closed out the half with two goals by Drew Anderson to make it 5-4 Binghamton heading into halftime.

Gavin Jacobsen got the Bearcats starting the second half on the right note with his first goal of the season, extending the Bearcats' lead to 6-4 at the 12:31 mark. Marist responded with back-to-back goals from Steven Cain and Joshua Balcarcel to tie the game at six. Garone stepped back in at 6:49 to fire in his second goal of the day to help the Bearcats retake the lead 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Red Foxes began the final quarter with a goal by Cain to tie the game at seven at 14:08. Binghamton retook the lead at 11:41 with Andrew Girolamo's first goal of the game.

Ferris saved his most entertaining goal for his final tally of the day when with 4:43 remaining, Ferris got a pass from Adams near the front of the net and fired the ball between his legs to the upper-left corner of the net to complete the hat trick.

With Binghamton leading 9-7, Marist made its final charge. Collin Patrick scored both of his goals within the final 90 seconds of the game, first at the 1:21 mark, and then again with 45 seconds remaining to tie the contest at nine. The Red Foxes then won the final faceoff to get a chance to hold for the last shot of the game. As time winded down, Mullan charged towards the net with the ball before firing in what would be the game-winning goal as the clock hit zero, giving the Red Foxes the win.

Other Notes
•    Jacobsen's goal was the first that the junior scored since March 25, 2023, against New Jersey Institute of Technology. That was the midfielder's first collegiate goal in his second game with the Bearcats.
•    Both Ferris and Girolamo led the Bearcats in assists with two each. Girolamo's two assists ties his career high that he previously set on April 13, 2024 against UMBC.
•    Ferris also led the Bearcats in ground balls against the Red Foxes with three along with freshman Flynn Wilson. Eoin MacKay and Lorenzo Ramos each added two.
