Women finish third, men fifth in final team standings

BOSTON, Mass. – Graduate students Jenna Chan and Marcus Johnson, senior Joe Cardascia and freshman Brennan Delany each won individual titles, highlighting Binghamton's performance during the second and final day of the America East Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday at the Boston Track & Tennis Center. The Bearcat women placed third out of nine teams in the final standings while the men were fifth - and just 1.5 points behind fourth-place UMBC.

In addition, the Bearcats earned three of the major awards that were presented at the conclusion of the meet. Redshirt sophomore Brian Luciano was named the Most Outstanding Men's Field Athlete after repeating as the weight throw champion on Saturday. Graduate student Josh Stone was chosen as the Men's Most Outstanding Track Athlete after scoring a team-best 18 points over the weekend. Fellow graduate student Penelope Paldino - who was second in the pentathlon on Saturday - received the America's East Women's Indoor Track & Field Elite 18 Award for her academic accomplishments as well as her performances during the meet.

Chan won the third 60 hurdles title of her career, clocking a first-place time of 8.36. That was .24 seconds clear of the rest of the field and was just .01 seconds away from tying her school record. Chan previously won the 60 hurdles title in 2022 and 2023 before placing second last year.

Cardascia, however, did break the school record in winning the 500 with a time of 1:03.11. That topped Zach Keefer's 2010 mark of 1:03.66. Sunday's victory marked the first individual title of Cardasica's career.

Johnson won his second conference crown after capturing the triple jump with a distance of 50-2 ½. Last spring, he won the America East outdoor title in the 400 hurdles.

Johnson and Cardascia were both on the third-place 4x400 relay team that also included freshman Andrew Fasone and senior Oliver Madariaga. The Bearcat quartet clocked a time of  3:13.24.

Delaney, meanwhile, took top honors in the pentathlon with a first-place score of 5.089 points. With his victory, the Bearcats have now won the event three times in the past six indoor conference meets.

Runner up performances on the men's side were turned in by sophomore Matthew Oluwole in the high jump (6-5) and Stone in the 3,000 (8:13.95). Stone won the 5,000 on Saturday evening and his 18 points ties his performance during the 2023 America East Indoor Championships.

Other medalists on the women's team included junior Lucciana Robertson, who was third in the women's high jump (5-7), and freshman Anna Gansrow, who was third in the mile (4:56.10). In the process, Gansrow broke Aziza Chigatayeva's 2019 freshman record of 4:59.75.

UAlbany swept both the men's and women's team titles.

All-conference honors were awarded to the top three finishers in each individual event as well as all first-place relay teams. Binghamton posted six men's selections and seven women's honorees.

Binghamton returns to the Boston Track & Tennis Center in two weeks for the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships.
