Cassella, Day Punch Tickets to Nationals

Both wrestlers reach the Finals on the first day of the EIWA Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the third year in a row, both Brevin Cassella and Cory Day will represent the Binghamton wrestling team at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Both wrestlers reached the finals in their respective weight class to secure a pre-allocation spot at nationals during the opening day of the 2025 EIWA Championships Friday at Lehigh's Stabler Arena. Each of them won two matches to put themselves in a position to help bring Binghamton its first individual EIWA championship since 2022, when current Assistant Coach Lou DePrez won the last of his three-consecutive titles. Additionally, if Cassella wins on Saturday, he will reach 100 victories for his career.

"I am extremely happy for Brevin and Cory to make it to the finals and secure spots for the NCAA championships," said Binghamton Head Wrestling Coach Kyle Borshoff. "They wrestled great today."

Overall, all 10 of Binghamton's wrestlers won at least one match, with nine of them remaining in the competition heading into the final session on Saturday. Among them, Cayden Bevis still has a chance to qualify for nationals with an automatic bid after winning three matches on Friday. In order to reach the NCAA Wrestling Championships for the first time in his career, he must win his opening match in the Consolation Semifinals on Saturday to make it to the Third Place match and earn one of the four pre-allocation spots at 197 lbs.

The Bearcats ended the first day in fifth place as a team with 90 points. They trail Army West Point for fourth place by three points and Drexel for third place by 3.5 points. Lehigh leads the tournament with 120 points, while Bucknell trails in second place with 101.5 Binghamton looks to pick up its first top five in the EIWAs since joining the conference in 2013.

"I thought the team competed tough," said Borshoff. "We need to show up Saturday morning and get back to work to put ourselves in a position to hopefully secure some at-large bids for the NCAAs as well."

Session One Notes
•    Six Binghamton wrestlers advanced to the Semifinals during the opening session of the tournament. Carter Baer, Cassella, Day, Will Ebert, Ivan Garcia and Carson Wagner each earned a bye to the Quarterfinals due to being seeded in the top four in their weight class. All of those wrestlers then won their opening match to advance.
•    In a nail-biter, Wagner avenged his loss to LIU's Robbie Sagaris in the consolation bracket of the 2024 EIWA Championships, which knocked Wagner out of the tournament. On Friday, Wagner took down Sagaris in a tiebreaker. Both wrestlers went into overtime tied at five, with neither able to get a point in sudden victory. Wagner began the first tiebreaker riding Sagaris, and he was ultimately able to ride his opponent for the full 30 seconds. LIU had an unsuccessful challenge at the end of the period, arguing Sagaris was able to complete a reversal on Wagner. Both wrestlers began the second tiebreaker neutral, with Sagaris nearly getting a takedown in the final seconds. However, Sagaris was not credited with a takedown by the officials. Despite another challenge by LIU, the call on the mat stood, and Wagner advanced.
•    Cassella jumped out to the lead late in the first period against Morgan State's Darrien Roberts and never looked back, picking up an 8-2 decision to advance to the Semifinals at the EIWAs for the second year in a row.
•    In his first match in nearly three weeks, Garcia made a triumphant return by defeating Bucknell's Braden Bower to advance.
•    Following a failed challenge from LIU that would have given Anthony D'Alesio a takedown and the lead, Ebert got a takedown of his own with eight seconds remaining in the third period to get a 4-0 decision.
•    Baer was the only Bearcat that needed two wins to reach the Semifinals. In the opening round, Baer pinned Morgan State's Cooper Lockhart in 43 seconds for his first fall of the season. He followed that with an 11-3 major decision over Navy's Dylan Elmore to reach the semis.
•    Day found himself in a closely contested bout with Drexel's Ibrahim Ameer. Throughout much of the match, neither wrestler was able to put up a point. Day ultimately began the third period on the bottom in a scoreless tie. 27 seconds into the frame, Day escaped Ameer to take a 1-0 lead. It was the only point Day needed the entire match, as he held off any attempted takedown by Ameer to secure the 1-0 decision.
•    Cayden Bevis, Fin Nadeau and Micah Roes each won their opening match in the session to reach the Quarterfinals before all three wrestlers were defeated to move to the consolation bracket.

Session Two Highlights
•    Standing between Cassella and a trip to Philadelphia was Bucknell's Myles Takats. Cassella used two takedowns in the first period and added an escape and a bonus point after Takats was called for stalling to win the bout 8-6.
•    Day would need to defeat Army West Point's Brady Colbert to reach the Finals. For a time, it looked as if this match would go the same way as Day's Quarterfinal bout, as he and Colbert were in a scoreless tie with less than a minute remaining in the second period. With Colbert riding Day, the Bearcat was able to complete a reversal and immediately follow that with a near fall worth four points to move ahead 6-0. Colbert was unable to take Day down in the third period, paving the way for Day to reach the Finals.
•    Bevis was victorious in two matches during the session to keep his hopes for getting an automatic bid for nationals alive. He first defeated Sacred Heart's Chris DeLena in a 13-5 major decision, and then followed that up with a 12-10 win over Hofstra's Nikolas Miller.
•    Baer attempted to qualify for nationals for the first time in his career, needing a win against the No. 1 seed Noah Mulvaney of Bucknell. It was Baer who went on offense early, as he took down Mulvaney 41 seconds into the bout. Baer followed that up with another takedown in the second period, giving him a 6-2 lead. Mulvaney escaped three times in the first two periods to make it 6-3 in favor of Baer heading into the third period. After Baer began the final frame with an escape, Mulvaney got an escape to make it 7-6 Baer. The Bearcat got an escape, only for Mulvaney to get a point back after Baer was called for stalling. Up 8-7 with less than a minute to go, Baer took a shot at Mulvaney's legs in an attempt to put away the match, but Mulvaney countered and was credited with a takedown with four seconds remaining. A challenge by Binghamton was ultimately unsuccessful, and Mulvaney won the match 10-8. With there only being two pre-allocation spots at 165 lbs., Baer missed out on an automatic bid for nationals.
•    Looking to punch his first ticket to nationals, Wagner went up against No. 1 seed Sheldon Seymour of Lehigh in the 125 Semifinals. Seymour took down Wagner with 57 seconds remaining in the first period and then pinned him with one second remaining in the frame. The loss prevents Wagner from obtaining one of the two pre-allocation spots for nationals at 125 lbs.
•    With there only being one pre-allocation spot available for 184 lbs., Ebert needed to win his semifinal match to remain in the running for nationals. While he was able to keep his bout with Hofstra's Ross McFarland tied at two at the end of the bout, McFarland had accumulated more than one minute of riding time to get an additional point and win the match 3-2.
•    Garcia's bid for the lone pre-allocation spot at 149 lbs., ended with a 5-1 loss to Lehigh's Malyke Hines.
•    Despite being out of the running for the lone pre-allocation spot at 133 lbs., Roes finished the day strong with a 16-0 technical fall against Morgan State's Kevin Lopez and a 4-1 decision in sudden victory against Navy's Brendan Ferretti.
•    Lucier ensured that he would wrestle on Saturday after he defeated LIU's Devin Matthews 9-2 in his first match of the session. He then lost to Army West Point's Rich Treanor 8-3 to move to the Seventh Place match.
•    Nadeau was eliminated following a 4-2 loss to Hofstra's Jurius Clark.
