Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by UMBC

Liam Ferris records 12th hat trick of his Binghamton career in loss to the Retrievers

BALTIMORE – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team was defeated by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County 17-7 Saturday at UMBC Stadium.

Liam Ferris scored three goals for the 12th hat trick of his career with the Bearcats, moving him into a tie with teammate Gage Adams and Michael Antinozzi for the third-most in program history. Connor Winters also made 16 saves, moving him closer to the program record for career saves. Winters is now up 489 for his career, putting him 20 behind Binghamton Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Kevin McKeown for the program record at 509.

UMBC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game, with goals from Josh Tang, Dante Marinello, Tyler Barnett and Ryan Demato. Ferris put Binghamton on the scoreboard with another goal worthy of the highlight reel. With just less than three minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Andrew Girolamo set Ferris up near the side of the net. Ferris then shot the ball behind his back into the net for his 24th goal of the season.

Thanks in part to eight saves in the first quarter by Winters, Binghamton went into the second frame only trailing 4-1. Ferris continued the Bearcats' run when he picked up a loose ball near midfield and fired it into an open net that was briefly vacated by goalie Connor McMahon 25 seconds into the quarter. But the Retrievers fought back by scoring four of the last five goals of the quarter to go into halftime up 8-3.

After Mike Dunleavy opened the third quarter with a man-up goal for the Retrievers 29 seconds into the frame, Ferris completed his hat trick at 11:33. But UMBC responded with four unanswered to extend its lead to 13-4. Thomas Kelly ended the run with his third goal of the season at 1:40 to make it 13-5 UMBC entering the fourth quarter. Girolamo and Colin DeLay each added a goal for the Bearcats in the final quarter, but it was not enough to complete a rally as UMBC responded with four goals of its own to pick up the win.

Binghamton plays its final road game of the regular season when the Bearcats take on Bryant on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
