SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team's late rally fell short as the Bearcats were defeated by Bryant 13-12 Saturday at Beirne Stadium.
Liam Ferris scored four goals for Binghamton to give himself his fourth hat trick in as many games, seventh this season and 13th of his career. The graduate attackman passes teammate
Gage Adams and Michael Antinozzi to move into sole possession for the third-most career hat tricks in program history. But Bryant countered with Zac Amend and Dawson Rielly each scoring three goals to help the Bulldogs win this America East Conference matchup.
It was Amend who began the scoring with a goal 57 seconds into the game to put Bryant ahead 1-0. A tally from Max Dantona then extended Bryant's lead to 2-0 at 12:28. Binghamton's response came about two minutes later when
Colin DeLay shot and scored his fourth goal of the season to bring it to 2-1 at 10:27. Rielly and Brian Russell gave Bryant a 4-1 lead later in the quarter. With time winding down in the opening frame,
Gavin Jacobsen took the ball and spun around a defender before firing in his sixth goal of the season into the top shelf with two seconds left. That tally gave the Bearcats momentum as they went into the second quarter trailing 4-2.
Andrew Girolamo carried that momentum over by bouncing in a shot for a goal at 13:20 in the second quarter to bring the Bearcats within one goal of the Bulldogs. Bryant then posted goals from Rielly and Luca Elmaleh to go up 6-3 with 9:53 left in the quarter. The remainder of the first half belonged to Binghamton.
The Bearcats finished the half with four unanswered goals to enter halftime up 7-6.
Will Feldmann began the run with his first goal of the year at 7:28. Ferris then scored back-to-back goals at 3:20 and 2:49 to tie the game up at six. Finally,
Dan Garone gave Binghamton its first lead with 1:03 remaining in the half.
Bryant quickly responded at the start of the second half with goals from Russell and Rielly to help the Bulldogs retake the lead 8-7 at 12:45 in the third quarter. While Garone's second goal of the game tied it up for the Bearcats at 9:09, Bryant ended the quarter with three unanswered goals to take an 11-8 lead into the fourth quarter.
Ferris kept the Bearcats in it with a man-up goal at 9:59 in the fourth quarter, but Bryant responded with two goals in 1:08 to go up 13-9 with 8:12 remaining. The Bearcats then made their run to try and catch the Bulldogs. First,
Anthony Bilello fed the ball to
Thomas Kelly, who then scored at 6:05 to make it 13-10. Less than two minutes later, following a Bryant turnover,
Nolan Sharkey sent a pass to
Lorenzo Ramos, who sprinted up the field with open space before winding up with his long lacrosse stick and scoring his first collegiate goal at 4:53. Down 13-11, Binghamton's run continued when Ferris scored his fourth goal of the day at 1:17 to bring the Bearcats within one.
Bryant won the ensuing faceoff and looked to run out the clock. With around 11 seconds remaining, however,
Matthew Rincon was able to take the ball away from Russell, giving Binghamton one last chance at tying the game. The Bearcats raced up the field. With seconds remaining,
Brady Sharkey fired away a shot at the goal, but it was stopped by Scott Einarson to give Bryant the win.
