VESTAL, N.Y. – Heading into Saturday's regular season finale against Vermont, a lot was on the line for Binghamton men's lacrosse goalie
Connor Winters.
Not only was he looking to help the Bearcats qualify for the America East Men's Lacrosse Championship, but he was also looking to make history by breaking the program record for career saves of 509, held by Head Coach
Kevin McKeown. Winters, who was also one of 10 Bearcats being honored before the game for Senior Day, needed to stop 13 shots to break the record.
Not only did the netminder break that record, but he set another one as well.
Winters made 22 saves, the most by a Binghamton goalie in program history, to help the Bearcats defeat the Catamounts 12-7 Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The victory clinches a spot in the America East men's lacrosse conference tournament for Binghamton.
Liam Ferris, who was also recognized during the Senior Day festivities, scored four goals for his fifth hat trick in as many games, eighth this season, and 14th of his career.
Gage Adams and
Dan Garone, who were also honored before the game, each added two goals for the Bearcats,
Winters continues to have success against the Catamounts. In his first start against Vermont on April 8, 2023, Winters tied the original single-game record of 20 saves. Then in 2024, Winters stopped another 18 shots while collecting a career-high 11 ground balls in an 11-10 victory in overtime in Burlington.
Binghamton, who enters the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed, faces No. 1 seed Bryant in the semifinals on Thursday at 4 p.m., at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, R.I.
