Luciano 14th in hammer, Johnson advances to 400 hurdle finals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore thrower Brian Luciano placed 14th overall in the men's hammer while graduate student Marcus Johnson advanced to the 400 hurdle finals, highlighting Binghamton's first day at the NCAA East Region Outdoor Track & Field Meet on Wednesday at the University of North Florida.

Luciano nearly qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championships, finishing just two places out of the top 12. His distance was 211-8. In 2025, Luciano was 29th overall at the East Region Meet in the hammer with a mark of 200-11.

The 2024-25 track & field campaign was a banner year for Luciano. He was named the America East Men's Indoor Performer of the Year and won his second straight conference weight throw crown. During the current outdoor season, Luciano broke his own school record in the hammer twice, including a distance of 219-11 at the Princeton Elite Meet two weeks ago.

Johnson, meanwhile, was second in his heat and ninth overall with a school-record time of 50.44 in the 400 hurdles. The top three finishers in each of the six heats, plus the next three fastest times, advanced to the finals, which take place Friday at 7:25 p.m.

Last year, Johnson was 25th overall in the 400 hurdles at the East Region meet, missing the finals by just one place. On Wednesday, he took .05 seconds off his previous program-record time of 50.49, which he set at the America East Championships.
