Lawson, Bade and Ferris cited for academic and athletic excellence

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior softball first baseman Emma Lawson, senior baseball third baseman Devan Bade and graduate student men's lacrosse attack Liam Ferris have been named the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar Athletes for their sports for the 2024-25 academic year.

The SUNY Scholar Athlete Award honors student-athletes for combining academic achievement with success in the arena of athletic competition. Students are nominated by their institutions based on their cumulative grade point average, current and career statistics, and athletic and academic honors. In the spring, fall and winter, student-athletes from each division are selected as winners, and in July two student athletes are selected as the overall men's and women's winners from each division.

Lawson played a pivotal role during the softball team's sweep of both the America East regular-season and tournament championships. She was both a first-team National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) All-Northeast Region selection as well as a first-team all-conference honoree. In addition, Lawson was named an ECAC All-Star.

Lawson won the America East batting title with a .379 average and ranked second with 51 RBI. She was also named to the America East All-Tournament Team after going 4-for-9 (.444) with a home run and team-best five RBI. At the ensuing Oregon NCAA Regional, Lawson went 2-for-6 (.333) with a team-high four RBI.

Academic honors have come in bunches this year for Lawson. After being inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society in April, she was chosen to the America East All-Academic Team in May as well as the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team last month. Earlier this week, she was named the America East's Softball Scholar-Athlete for the 2024-25 academic year.

Lawson is the fourth Binghamton softball player ever to be named a SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete. She joins Jessica Phillips (2012), current Bearcat head coach Jess Bump (2014) and Jessica Rutherford (2018).

Bade was a key contributor during the baseball team's run to the America East championship. After repeating as a first-team all-conference selection, he was named the America East Tournament Most Outstanding Performer.

For the season, Bade ranked fifth in the America East in batting (.352), tied for second with 13 home runs and won the RBI title by driving in a conference-best 61 runs. During the conference tournament, Bade had 12 hits and 12 RBI.

Bade is the eighth Binghamton baseball player to earn SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete honors and the first since Jason Agresti in 2018. Other previous honorees include T.J. Kowalchuk (2004), Brendon Hitchcock (2006 & 2007), Murphy Smith (2009), Jim Calderone (2010), Dave Ciocchi (2012) and Eddie Posavec (2017).

Ferris, meanwhile, was a first-team all-conference selection for the men's lacrosse team this season. He finished second in the America East with 2.57 goals and 3.43 points per game. Ferris also led the Bearcats with 36 goals and 48 points. Eight times during the season, Ferris recorded a hat trick.

For his work both on the field and in the classroom, Ferris was named to the America East All-Academic Team back in April. Then on Tuesday, he was named a Scholar All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).

Ferris is the third Binghamton men's lacrosse player to earn SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete honors. He joins current Bearcat head coach Kevin McKeown (2006) and Mike Antinozzi (2014).

More than 14,000 student-athletes compete at SUNY institutions representing 53 different colleges and universities at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III/USCAA and NJCAA levels and are eligible for the awards. The SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards recognize outstanding academic and athletic success in 29 different sports and are presented three times a year to coincide with the specific sports contested in the fall, winter and spring seasons. The Scholar Athletes of the Year in each sport will then be nominated for an overall Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's sports and women's sports in each category that will be announced in mid-July.

Since the 2003-04 academic year, 92 Binghamton student-athletes across all sports have been named SUNY Chancellor's Scholar Athletes.
