TOKYO, Japan – Emily Mackay, a 2021 Binghamton alum, has advanced to the semifinals of the women's 1,500 at the World Track & Field Championships on Friday evening in Tokyo, Japan. Up next is the semifinal round on Sunday at 8:07 a.m. EST. The finals, meanwhile, are set for Tuesday at 9:05 a.m. EST.

Running in the second of four 14-runner heats, Mackay placed fifth overall with a time of 4:08.19. The top six finishers in each heat advanced to Sunday's semifinals. The winner of the second heat was Nelly Chepchirchir of Kenya (4:07.01) while the top overall time was turned in by Freywey Hailu of Ethiopia in the third heat (4:01.23).

This marks the second straight world championship meet in which Mackay has advanced to the semifinal round. She also cleared the first round at the Paris Olympics last August.

A five-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American during her years at Binghamton, Mackay capped her career with a sixth-place finish in the women's 1,500 at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
