VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman Angel Walia captured the "C" Singles title and added a doubles win in the top flight to highlight Binghamton women's tennis' results at the NateRentals.com Binghamton Championship, contested all weekend at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center. 

With much of the Bearcats' lineup out with injury/illness, Walia shined. As the top seed in the "C" draw, she earned a super tiebreak win over an opponent from Saint Francis in the quarterfinals and a straight-set win against Mercyhurst in the semifinals. She then posted a win in the title match over her opponent from Saint Francis. 

In the "A" Doubles flight, Walia paired with junior Samantha Jaros to reach the quarterfinals. 

Freshman Apara Khandare upset the No. 6 seed in the "A" Singles flight with a 7-5, 6-3 win to reach the quarterfinals. Sophomore Kayla Castellano reached the semifinals of the "G" Singles draw with a lopsided win. 

"Despite half of our team being injured or ill and unable to compete in the tournament, we did the best we could considering the circumstances," head coach Paul Caceres said. "Apara earned her first singles win of the fall against a seeded player in the top flight and Angel won her flight. Kayla and Samantha fought valiantly in the matches they played and picked up wins in singles and doubles respectively over the course of the weekend."

The Bearcats return to action at the ITA New England Regional beginning on Oct. 9 at Harvard.
