Philanthropic Endeavors to Honor Tradition and Empower Student-Athletes

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton University Division of Athletics has announced the creation of its first-ever philanthropic giving societies: the 1946 Legacy Society and the Bearcat Society. These societies mark an important milestone, celebrating the University's rich athletic history while advancing the success of current and future student-athletes.

The 1946 Legacy Society, recognizing annual contributions of $10,000 or more, commemorates the year Binghamton, then known as Triple Cities College, fielded its first intercollegiate athletic teams. Members of this society are among the University's most dedicated benefactors, whose generosity enables Binghamton Athletics to compete at the highest levels of NCAA Division I competition.

The Bearcat Society, recognizing annual contributions between $1,000 and $9,999, is named in honor of Baxter the Bearcat, the University's beloved mascot. Members demonstrate a strong commitment to Binghamton Athletics by providing vital resources that enrich the academic and athletic experiences of student-athletes.

Both societies offer exclusive engagement opportunities, including special events, insider communications, recognition in select publications, and unique opportunities to connect directly with coaches, student-athletes, and fellow supporters.

"The launch of the 1946 Legacy Society and the Bearcat Society is part of Director of Athletics Gene Marshall, Jr.'s strategic vision -- another bold step forward for Binghamton Athletics," said Ze D. Zeon, Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief Development Officer. "These new giving societies celebrate where we've been and fuel a bold future. I want to thank Jay Duseau '98, Liz Flynn, Bryan Goodman, Andy Hutchings '05, Dennis Kalina, and Pat Murphy--members of the dedicated committee whose hard work helped bring these societies to life."

Membership in either the 1946 Legacy Society or the Bearcat Society represents a meaningful partnership in advancing the mission of Binghamton Athletics. By joining, benefactors directly support scholarships, team resources, state-of-the-art facilities, and comprehensive programs that foster student-athlete success both on and off the field.

"Philanthropy is essential to the success of our programs, and these societies provide a meaningful way to both recognize and engage those who believe in the mission of Binghamton Athletics," said Eugene Marshall, Jr., Director of Athletics. "The 1946 Legacy Society and the Bearcat Society ensure that our student-athletes have the resources to excel academically, athletically, and personally, while strengthening the foundation for the future of our division."

"The creation of these new giving societies marks a pivotal moment for Binghamton Athletics. It's a testament to the incredible passion and loyalty of our community," Binghamton University Vice President of Advancement David Whitmore said. "Their support, now formalized through these societies, will directly fuel the success of our student-athletes, helping them excel both on the field and in the classroom. This is more than just fundraising; it's about building a legacy for generations to come."
